Effects In India of Imperialism

Positive

Negative

How did European countries become Imperial Powers?

Imperialism's Impact In India Today

  • India couldn't support itself because its economy was going down, a result of the British not buy products from India, but giving its own.
  • The British killed and tortured many Indians, including the Sepoys.
  • They believed partly in the concept of "White Man's Burden". The part of being racist and thinking of the Indian's as lesser than the British. Not actually helping them.
  • Britain exploited the Indians to the fullest by making its economy worse, creating famine by encouraging to grow cash crops, and taking money from India for British wars.
  • India was modernized as the British introduced better/newer transportation methods, brought modern technology, improved the roads, set up postal networks, and had cars and trains for transport.
  • British encouraged sanitation, and increased hygiene.
  • Medical and technology improvements were because of the British.
  • British brought equality to the people, therefore, removing the caste system in India (but then the British thought they were superior, and showed racism to the Indians, and their culture).

I believe that European countries became imperial power by first of all having a strong military to fight, because with a weak military, you don't take over, instead you get taken out. Second of all using everything to it's advantage. Just like how China became week because of Opium. The Europeans find the weaknesses of other countries, which I think is a key point. European countries became imperial powers because of exploiting people, one after another. Just because they had technology and strong military, the used that to take over other nations and make their own country even more richer, and powerful.

  • After the British left India in 1947, Muslims and Hindus had conflicts and it resulted in Partition of them. As result Muslim moved across the border and separated- which made Pakistan today.
  • India wasn't a democracy before the British came, but after they left, India became a democracy. India is still a democracy today.
  • There is also English spoken today in India, and there are universities that the British built.

Sepoy's get angry!

Specific Technology For Imperialism

The British had Sepoy's work for them. Sepoys were people who worked for the British and they were like soldiers for the British. There were Muslims and Hindu's that were Sepoys. But the British kept exploiting them, and didn't respect their culture at all. Muslims don't eat pork and Hindus were vegetarian. But the British didn't care about their traditions, and religion, and they gave the Sepoys bullet cartridges which were greased of pork and beef fat. The Sepoys found out and rebelled about this in 1857. After the rebellion, the

the British Parliament took over India, and the British East India company was no more, but it was worse. India is now a British Colony.

British Takeover

  • Europeans were traveling through the Silk Road to India for trade.
  • Many European countries wanted to have an impact/control over India, so they came to the South Eastern Coast of India. England, was the most powerful and took control over India.
  • The East India Company was formed.
  • Weapons: New and advanced weapons are need to have power as country. Without weapons, the British couldn't have taken over India.
  • Ships: Because of they steam powered ships, Europeans could easily go to other nations. They could even take their army overseas and take over other nations like they did with Congo and India. Ships were vital to Imperialism.
  • Medicine: A threat to a nation trying to take over another, is its diseases. We see this when European try to go to Africa, there were diseases like malaria, and the King Leopold couldn't have taken over without having medical technology to find cures for these diseases. That's why we see medical advancements in the Congo because of the Belgians. Europeans countries couldn't have afford have their people go to other countries and get killed because of diseases. Conquering those diseases were a huge achievement for Imperialism.

East India Company

India

East India Company was a British joint stock company, set up to seek trade with the East Indies. The Company had wealthy merchants and aristocrats, and it gained a lot of power. It controlled most of the trade in the world. Like they had controlled the trade of tea, opium, salt, etc.

The company even had its private army to control a lot of India. It had conflicts with the people in Bengal, India. The Battle of Plassey, was the battle between the East India Company, and the people of Bengal- lead by the Nawab of Bengal.

  • There were many reasons, anyone would be interested in India.
  • India was full of resources like Diamonds (which was the only source for diamonds at that time).
  • India also was full of Natural gas, Coal, Iron Ore, Petroleum, and Cotton.
  • So this was like a "gold mine" for the British. British again also have to exploit, in order to get a lot of money, and they have to be hypocrites again.

India

The East India Company got a victory, which left them with even more control over Bengal, and most of India.

Is it Really the Dawn of a Better Era?

Congo

Leopold's Rule

  • As Leopold said that this would be a dawn of a better era, I completely disagree. This wasn't better for anyone except Leopold and the Europeans. Leopold completely exploited the natives of their own land and resources.
  • The people from the Congo didn't have any say in the government.
  • He killed and kidnapped people in the Congo, to force them to bring him rubber, so that he could make billions of dollars selling it because of the huge demand of it to make tires for cars and bicycles. He also had the Congolese people killed so that they would be scared of him and not rebel against him. King Leopold was a very cruel ruler.
  • King Leopold might have thought about "White mans Burden", but he clearly didn't have a mindset of helping others who are "savages" or "uncivilized", as they thought.
  • Congo was loaded with resources, but those resources didn't didn't bring any good to Congo.
  • Congo had Ivory, copper, and the most beneficial to Leopold was the tree that produced rubber. Rubber was in a very high demand for making tires, tubes, hoses and other products which a lot of people needed.
  • So what did Leopold do (which makes him rich)? Leopold passed a Law, making all the rubber, ivory, and copper, his property.

Congo

  • King Leopold II was the King of Belgium.
  • He sent a guy named Henry Morton Stanley to Africa, to find and posses a piece of land for the King.
  • From the order of Leopold, Stanley had treaties signed by the Africans, which gave Leopold "everything". Leopold said for the treaties to be “brief as possible and must grant us everything.”
  • Because the Africans were illiterate, Leopold easily exploited them.
  • The Colony that Leopold took was a big part of land called Congo. Now Congo is known as the Belgian Congo.

Effects of Imperialism In Congo

Negative

  • The Congolese people were fully exploited and segregated on their own land by the Belgians.
  • Congolese people were discriminated and had very few rights.
  • As always the Europeans/Belgians didn't care about the culture, and it was being destroyed.
  • They didn't have education, even after independence, which is obviously very important for a government and a country to establish.
  • The people were tortured and killed by the Belgians, which caused fear.
  • Congolese people were forced to work in the mine, and Europeans got the rewards of the hard labor in the mines, and Europeans got the crops and the natives starved.
  • Many, many Congolese people died of starvation, war, disease, and slavery/ labor that was forced.
  • The Imperialism by the Belgians/Europeans brought the economy down, only gave benefits to Europeans, and the racism by the Europeans resulted in many Congolese people getting tortured and killed-just because of their skin color, and the mindset/ideology of the "white man" being superior of others.

Imperialism In Congo and India

Positive Effects

  • The healthcare improved because of the Belgians
  • There were some job opportunities created, and/but mines, railroad, ports were made for exploiting.
  • Palm Oil and cotton production increased:
  • Cotton- 23000 (1932) to 127000 (1939)
  • Palm Oil- 2500 tons 23000 tons-43 years.

Independence: Congo gained its independence in 1960 from Belgium

Impact today: The Belgians- or King Leopold's exploitation for years made the Congo very unstable. The people didn't have education, and that meant that there was no government system of their own. People were just forced to work in the mines or other places the Belgians wanted. So they weren't really given a chance to do something else, and all that made the unstable to be a proper or good country. Belgium left the Congo in very bad position. Because of the exploitation, Congo today is very corrupt and unstable. There are wars going on, the people are very poor today. There are many crimes and about 45,000 deaths a month. All because of so called Imperialism started by King Leopold.
