Daughters of Liberty

The Daughters of Liberty helped the war effort by boycotting British goods, and refused to buy British cloth, tea, and other goods.

As an alternative, they made homespun cloth and tea, and encouraged other women to follow their example.

Results of the Stamp Act

Cause and Formation of the Sons and Daughters of Liberty

The Stamp Act was repealed a year after it passed, in March 1766, causing the Sons of Liberty to become less active; however they were the group mainly responsible for the Boston Tea Party after the Tea Act of 1773.

The Townshend Acts of 1767

  • The Sons and Daughters of Liberty were formed chiefly in retaliation to The Stamp Act of 1765.

  • The groups originated primarily in New York and Boston, Massachusetts, but the idea of protesting the British government spread quickly throughout the colonies.

Because the Stamp Act was no longer in effect, the British established the Townshend Acts to increase their revenue and to repay debts. Imports of glass, lead, paints, tea, and paper were taxed .

The original Sons of Liberty began as the Loyal Nine, an organization with nine primary members.
