European dominance of East Africa has influenced it dramatically. In addition to European languages, they also speak African languages. Their main religion is "Swahili". This developed while trading with Arabic traders.
Early European Influence and Conflict
In the 1800's, most slavery was gone in Europe. Instead of slavery, they wanted gold,ivory, and rubber.
To get these items, they needed to needed areas in Africa that were rich with these. They wanted their empire to grow so they began building establishments more and more. They still wanted more. The British began taking over much of Africa. In the 1880's, European nations started dividing up parts of Africa for themselves. To control the power these nations had, they used imperialism. In the 1960's, many African nations grew to independence from these European settlers. This independence just sparked more and more problems.
Religion
East Africa dominated by religious culture. East African religion come from their ancestors and come in a wide variety. Depending on country, religion varies. In Ethiopia, most people either believe in Christianity or Islam. In Sudan and Somalia, people are mainly muslim. Throughout all these religions and regions, most people are Animists.
History
The slave trade goes all the back to 1000 thousand years ago. East Africans, Arabs, and Europeans kidnapped Africans, enslaved , and shipped them to ports in Africa and Southwest Asia. Most of the slaves went to countries ruled by the Islam religion. In the 1500's, Portuguese settlers started building forts and houses to support the slave trade. In the 1700's, the island of Zanzibar became an international slave trading center.
The Slave Trade
Christian missionaries came to Africa and taught Christianity to the Africans in as early as 300 AD. 200 years later word of Christianity spread into Nubia ( the area of Sudan and Egypt). In the 1200's, a Christian leader named Lalibela ruled Ethiopia. He built 11 rock churches during his leadership. He convinced others that he was told by God to make these churches. In 700 AD, Islam dominated the area and was the main religion in Egypt and parts of North Africa. Muslim Arabs spread the word to many cities and countries.
It is estimated that about 10000 slaves were being sold a year to North Africa and the Middle East
Throughout the whole trading, it is estimated that about 12,000,000 slaves were sold.
These trades went as far as the Persian Gulf, North Africa, Brazil, America, and the Middle East
