Competitive swimming was first introduces in the 1800's in Britain by the national swimming society. The first 2 strokes were the breaststroke and the side stroke. (Not a stroke anymore.) In 1873 John Trudgen introduced freestyle with a flutter kick. In 1896 swimming was first included in the olympics.

The first pool was called the Great Bath and it existed over 5000 years ago. The Great Bath was built in Pakistant City. The maximum depth is 2.4 meters. Pools were used for bathing, religious ceremony's, and training for war. It was standard education for elementary age boys to learn how to swim. The Great Bath was made out of bricks covered in plaster.
