The more high-tech our lives become, the more nature we need to achieve natural balance.

The mind/body/nature connection, also called vitamin N, will enhance physical and mental health.

In the new purposeful place, natural history will be as important as human history to regional and personal identity.

Human/nature social capital will enrich and redefine community to include all living things.

Utilizing both technology and nature, experience will increase our intelligence, creative thinking, and productivity, giving birth to the hybrid mind.

Through biophilic design, our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and towns would not only conserve watts, but produce human energy.

In relationships with nature, the high-performance human will conserve and create natural habitat and new economic potential where we live, learn, work, and play.

1. Nature-Deficit Disorder can not only be reversed but our lives can be enriched through our relationship with nature, beginning with our senses. We have more than just our five commonly known senses. The current number ranges from ten to thirty including empty stomach, thirst, joint position, and blood sugar levels.

2. Nature is very therapeutic for physical illness and mental health. Doctors are even more commonly using nature as a prescription thats refill is unlimited. Nature helps with depression and makes aging easier.

3. Location can describe a person. Biotic and abiotic elements surrounding the individual may affect the their mood and total appearance. Where we choose to live can make a difference on our happiness and health.

Diane Ackerman concluded after a 9 year study that the mind was positioned all over the body, thus making sense of our compound wonders that we classify as touch, taste, smell, hearing, and vision.

Spending time outdoors comes with major health benefits. It can enhance mood and self-esteem, while reducing feelings of anger, confusion, depression, and tension. It may also reduce blood pressure and will burn calories.

The greater diversity in an area the more benefits it will receive to support the human body. It will not only help from decay, injury, loss, and waste but will strengthen the quality of life as a whole.

1.Biophilic Design- A way of designing the places where we live, work, and learn.

Louv believes that we have often designed our cities and suburbs in ways that both degrade the environment and separate us from nature. He wants to popularize "Green" architecture to increase the impact of nature upon humans.

2. Ecotherapy- The healing and growth nurtured by healthy interactions with earth.

Also known as "Green Therapy" Louv explains how ecotherapy can be prescribed to help patients mentally and emotionally.

3. Biomimicry- Imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems.

Louv studies the historic biomimicry that human flight can resemble birds.

Louv believes that we are entering the most creative period in history and Vitamin N will nourish the best human qualities of creativity, intelligence, connection, and compassion.

Louv suggests we cultivate the "Hybrid Mind" thereby utilizing nature and technology in ways that promote creativity, intelligence, and productivity.

Louv talks about genome composition between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In prokaryotes most of the genome is non repetitive DNA, while in eukaryotes there are coding genes. If an offspring has genetically obese parents, it is less likely to be one with nature and more likely to associate itself with technology.

Louv explains how the chlorophyll molecules in green plants resemble a similarity to mammals blood. They both consist of a single atom surrounded by carbon and nitrogen atoms. This suggests a common origin where life began on earth, relating plants and animals.

Louv talks about how there is more organisms than what is to be seen when looking at the big picture. There is more to nature than we all notice. Beneath the shrub forest, fungi and algae connect to the roots of the chaparral and exchange water and nutrients.

Scientist Hubbell studies natural beauty and organic complexity and how it has changed over time. In the beginning of the twentieth century, art, and architecture was a symbol of beauty, imagination and organic expression. Comparing then to now, everything has changed.

Louv describes the idiosyncrasies of humans and how nature directly impacts them.

The Seven Basic Concepts that can help reshape ones life.

Main Idea

What I learned

Richard Louv focused his attention on Nature-Deficit Disorder which refers to his hypothesis that human beings are spending less and less time outdoors, resulting in a wide range of behavioral problems. In The Nature Principle, Louv educates readers on how society today has developed such an outsized faith in technology, that we have not adequately studied how humans are enhanced through the power of the natural world. By surrounding ourselves with nature, humans can boost their intelligence and creativity, promote health, build smarter and more sustainable businesses, and ultimately strengthen human bonds.

What location is right for you?

There are plenty of options for people young and old outdoors. Strenuous and non-strenuous activities from hiking and mountain bike climbing to the more simple acts of gardening and bird watching.

Quotes

Autobiography

"People think of the mind as being located in the head, but the latest findings in physiology suggest that the mind doesn't really dwell in the brain but travels throughout the whole body on enzymes."

Nature

Principle

My name is Avery Grace Pedro. I grew up in a family of four with my mom, dad, and older brother, who is currently enrolled in the Air Force. I was born with a deaf ear, but not many people can tell. I have been playing soccer and basketball for 12 years. My dream is to attend Northeastern University in Boston. I would love to work at the Boston Children's Hospital as a pediatric physicians assistant or a nurse practitioner.

"There is growing evidence to show that the exposure to nature brings substantial mental health benefits according to Green Exercise and Green Care. In a 2009 report by researchers there was evidence in two broad health outcomes; improvement in psychological well being, and generation of physical health benefits."

"Scientists at the University of Sheffield in the UK have found that the more species that live in a park, the greater the psychological benefits to human beings. The research shows that maintaining biodiversity levels is important...not only for conservation, but also to enhance the quality of life for city residents."

Human Restoration and the End of Nature-Deficit Disorder

By: Richard Louv

Vocabulary 6-10

6. Genome- The genetic material of an organism

7. Hemoglobin- iron containing, oxygen transport in red blood cells.

Personal Reaction

8. Chaparral- shrubland plant community.

10. Idiosyncrasies- A model of behavior or way of thought

The Nature Principal was very informational in a variety of ways. Louv supports his theory's using scientific experiments along with personal experiences that readers can understand and relate to. On the contrary it was occasionally drawn out and repetitive, making it mundane at times.

9. Organic Complexity- Any member of a large class of gas, liquid, or solid complex compounds containing carbon.

Vocabulary 1-5

Evaluation

The rating scale I created was based off of trees. Trees provide so much from clean air, oxygen, and shade, to providing food, wood, and even marking seasons. The more trees the better for the surrounding organisms. I give the book three and a half trees. The first three trees represent the informational evidence that Louv displayed to support his hypothesis between nature and technology. The fourth tree is not quite fully developed. If the book had more nutrients at points, it would have successfully finished growing the fourth and completed the fifth tree.

4. Vitamin N- nature

Louv concludes that strengthening your bond with nature can yield significant mind/body benefits. Studies show that a reduced exposure to nature is linked to obesity, cancer, heart disease, anxiety, and depression.

5. Hybrid Mind- The blending of different categories to form one, single, highly developed category.
