August 12th, 1898

  • In the summer of 1902, the US had officially announced the Rebellion in the Philippines over
  • Later the US granted the Filipinos more of a place in governing their own country.
  • Eventually the US gave independence to the Philippines
  • On this date, the US and Spain agreed to a cease fire
  • American and Spanish leaders discussed over terms for a new peace treaty
  • Americans debated over the future of the new land they acquired
  • Cuba was granted freedom and Spain allowed the US to annex Guam and Puerto Rico
  • In 1903 one of the most amazing accomplishments in engineering history was started
  • The Panama Canal was completed and took around 10 years to build
  • The cost was nearly $390 million and required more than 40,000 men but stretched 50 miles

  • In 1900, secret Chinese groups wanted to rid themselves of foreign control and formed a group known as the Boxers
  • They rose to power and killed hundreds while imprisoning others
  • The US had to stop the Rebellion
  • The New York Journal printed a private letter written by Enrique Dupuy De Lome
  • Enrique was a Spanish ambassador
  • The letter which the man wrote was intercepted by a Cuban agent and sent it to the newspaper company
  • It stated that McKinley was "weak" and "bidder" for admiration over the crowd which outraged the nation.
  • In 1904 Roosevelt talked about his "Big Stick" diplomacy and talked about what came to be known as the "Roosevelt Corollary" to the Monroe Doctrine
  • When discussing it, Roosevelt announced that the US would get involved in any affairs in Latin America in order to maintain a level of stability
  • The first time the US applied the Roosevelt Corollary was in the Dominican Republic
