Song #5: Burn by Ellie Goulding

When the light started out they don’t know what they heard

Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world

We'll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky

'Cause we got the fire, fire, fire

Yeah we got the fire, fire, fire

And we gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

Gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

When the light started out they don’t know what they heard

Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world

We'll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky

'Cause we got the fire, fire, fire

Yeah we got the fire, fire, fire

And we gonna let it burn

When the light started out they don’t know what they heard

Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world

We'll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky

'Cause we got the fire, fire, fire

Yeah we got the fire, fire, fire

And we gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

Gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

When the light started out they don’t know what they heard

Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world

We gonna let it burn burn burn burn (burn burn)

Burn burn burn burn (burn burn)

We can light it up, up, up

So they can't put it out, out, out

We can light it up, up, up

So they can't put it out, out, out

We can light it up, up, up

So they can't put it out, out, out

We can light it up, up, up

So they can't put it out, out, out

We, we don't have to worry 'bout nothing

'Cause we got the fire, and we're burning one hell of a something

They, they gonna see us from outer space, outer space

Light it up, like we're the stars of the human race, human race

When the light started out they don’t know what they heard

Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world

We'll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky

'Cause we got the fire, fire, fire

Yeah we got the fire, fire, fire

And we gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

Gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

We don't wanna leave, no. We just wanna be right now (right), r-r-right now

And what we see is everybody's on the floor acting crazy, getting loco 'til the lights out

Music's on, I'm waking up, we fight the fire, then we burn it up

And it's over now, we got the love, there's no sleeping now, no sleeping now, no sleeping

Song #3: Shooting Star by Owl City

Song #4: The Great Escape by Boys Like Girls

Brighter than a shooting star

Shine no matter where you are tonight

A thousand heart beats beat in time

It makes this dark planet come alive

So when the lights flicker out tonight

You gotta shine

When the sun goes down and the lights burn out

Then it's time for you to shine

Brighter than a shooting star

So shine no matter where you are

Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light

'Cause it's time for you to shine

Brighter than a shooting star

So shine no matter where you are tonight

Woah-oh, woah-oh, woah-oh

Brighter than a shooting star

So shine no matter where you are tonight.

Close your tired eyes, relax and then

Count from 1 to 10 and open them

All these heavy thoughts will try to weigh you down

But not this time

Way up in the air, you're finally free

And you can stay up there right next to me

All this gravity will try to pull you down

But not this time

When the sun goes down and the lights burn out

Then it's time for you to shine

Brighter than a shooting star

So shine no matter where you are

Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light

'Cause it's time for you to shine

Brighter than a shooting star

So shine no matter where you are tonight

Woah-oh, woah-oh, woah-oh

Brighter than a shooting star

Shine no matter where you are tonight

Gaze into my eyes when the fire starts

And fan the flames so hot it melts our hearts

Oh, the pouring rain will try to put it out

But not this time

Let your colors burn and brightly burst

Into a million sparks that all disperse

And illuminate a world that'll try to bring you down

But not this time

When the sun goes down and the lights burn out

Then it's time for you to shine

Brighter than a shooting star

So shine no matter where you are

Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light

'Cause it's time for you to shine

Brighter than a shooting star

So shine no matter where you are tonight

Woah-oh, woah-oh, woah-oh

Paper bags and plastic hearts

All are belongings in shopping carts

It's goodbye

But we got one more night

Let's get drunk and ride around

And make peace with an empty town

We can make it right

Throw it away

Forget yesterday

We'll make the great escape

We won't hear a word they say

They don't know us anyway

Watch it burn

Let it die

Cause we are finally free tonight

Tonight will change our lives

It's so good to be by your side

We'll cry

We won't give up the fight

We'll scream loud at the top of our lungs

And they'll think it's just cause we're young

And we'll feel so alive

Throw it away

Forget yesterday

We'll make the great escape

We won't hear a word they say

They don't know us anyway

Throw it away

Forget yesterday

We'll make the great escape

We won't hear a word they say

They don't know us anyway

Watch it burn

Let it die

Cause we are finally free tonight

Throw it away

Forget yesterday

We'll make the great escape

We won't hear a word they say

They don't know us anyway

Watch it burn

Let it die

Cause we are finally free tonight

All of the wasted time

The hours that were left behind

The answers that we'll never find

They don't mean a thing tonight

Throw it away

Forget yesterday

We'll make the great escape

We won't hear a word they say

They don't know us anyway

Song #2: If I Die Young by The Band Perry

"O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!

It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night

Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear;

Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!

So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows,

As yonder lady o'er her fellows shows. (1.5.44-49)

Romeo describes Juliet's beauty in terms of dark and light. "She doth teach the torches to burn bright" means both that her beauty is brighter than the blaze of any torch and that her presence makes the whole room light up. The bright blaze of Juliet's beauty is made even brighter by the contrasts with the blackness of an "Ethiope" and the blackness of crows. An Ethiope is a person described by the greeks as very dark-skinned.

...the sharp knife of a short life, oh well?

I've had just enough time

So put on your best, boys, and I'll wear my pearls

What I never did is done

A penny for my thoughts, oh, no, I'll sell 'em for a dollar

They're worth so much more after I'm a goner

And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin'

Funny when you're dead how people start listenin'

If I die young, bury me in satin

Lay me down on a bed of roses

Sink me in the river at dawn

Send me away with the words of a love song

Uh oh (uh, oh)

The ballad of a dove (oh, uh)

Go with peace and love

Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket

Save 'em for a time when you're really gonna need 'em, oh

The sharp knife of a short life, oh well

I've had just enough time

So put on your best, boys, and I'll wear my pearls.

If I die young, bury me in satin

Lay me down on a bed of roses

Sink me in the river at dawn

Send me away with the words of a love song

Uh oh, uh oh

Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother

She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh,

And life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no

Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby

The sharp knife of a short life, oh well

I've had just enough time

If I die young, bury me in satin

Lay me down on a bed of roses

Sink me in the river at dawn

Send me away with the words of a love song

The sharp knife of a short life, oh well

I've had just enough time

And I'll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom

I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger,

I've never known the lovin' of a man

But it sure felt nice when he was holdin' my hand,

There's a boy here in town, says he'll love me forever,

Who would have thought forever could be severed by...

Here, Juliet is talking about how even in the dark they can see because their love is so luminous. The two of them together are so joyful and bright in love, that they don't need the sun.

"Lovers can see to do their amorous rites

By their own beauties" (3.2.8-9).

I never want it to stop

Because I don't wanna start all over

Start all over

I was afraid of the dark

But now it's all that I want

All that I want, all that I want

And when the daylight comes I'll have to go

But tonight I'm gonna hold you so close

Cause in the daylight we'll be on our own

But tonight I need to hold you so close

And when the daylight comes I'll have to go

But tonight I'm gonna hold you so close

Cause in the daylight we'll be on our own

But tonight I need to hold you so close

Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-whoa (yeah), oh-whoa (yeah), oh-whoa (yeah), oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (yeah)

Oh-whoa (yeah), oh-whoa (yeah), oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

"Night's candles are burnt out, and jocund day Stands tiptoe on the mosty mountaintops. I must be gone and live, or stay and die." (3.5.9-11)

Romeo sees the sun come up, and the day announces it's jolly (jocund) arrival. Here he notices that his cover of the night is gone, and he summarizes the sad irony of the whole situation. As he realizes that he cannot stay or he will die, at one point he wishes to stay and did not care if they found him, but then realized he would be put to death upon discovery.

“But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?

It is the east, and Juliet is the sun" (2.2.2-3).

Here, Romeo compares Juliet to the sun. In meaning, this comparison could be to how he is in a deep sadness, (because Rosaline doesn't know he exists) and Juliet is the light that is showing him the way out of this dark hole. In this scene, Romeo pretty much forgets all about Rosaline, whom he had previously convinced himself he loved. In Romeo's eyes, Juliet is his sun, she is his light that can show him happiness.

Song #1: Daylight by Maroon 5

Themes.

Here I am waiting

I'll have to leave soon

Why am I holding on?

We knew this day would come

We knew it all along

How did it come so fast?

This is our last night but it's late

And I'm trying not to sleep

Cause I know, when I wake, I will have to slip away

And when the daylight comes I'll have to go

But tonight I'm gonna hold you so close

Cause in the daylight we'll be on our own

But tonight I need to hold you so close

Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Here I am staring at your perfection

In my arms, so beautiful

The sky is getting bright, the stars are burning out

Somebody slow it down

This is way too hard, cause I know

When the sun comes up, I will leave

This is my last glance that will soon be memory

And when the daylight comes I'll have to go

But tonight I'm gonna hold you so close

Cause in the daylight we'll be on our own

But tonight I need to hold you so close

Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

The definition of love is differed among people.

People try to hide their secrets but will inevitably be found out.

The pills are suicide, the fist is revenge, and the knife is murder.

Love leads lovers to enact an isolation from the world around them.

Connection

#1. The song has the same use of night and day that is in the book. Morning (light) has a higher risk of Romeo being captured & killed.

#2. The song is about long-distance relationships, which is what Romeo & Juliet are going through when Romeo gets banished from Verona. "When the daylight comes I'll have to go... this is way too hard." -Maroon 5.

Romeo, forced to leave Verona in the morning, and Juliet, not wanting him to leave her room, both pretend that it is still night, and that the light is actually darkness:

“More light and light, more dark and dark our woes” (3.5.36).

Interpretation

Connection

Shakespeare made the glare of day & light a threat to the couple, for there was a higher chance their relationship would be revealed out in the open.

#1. "Give me Romeo; and, when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine..." Juliet says that when she dies, make Romeo's face out of the stars of the constellation. The whole world would fall in love with night and forget about day. "Burn" has a lyric: "Light it up, like we're the stars of the human race." which Goulding emphasizes the importance of her and her lovers' relationship with a duel meaning of the word “stars.”

#2. "And what we see is everybody's on the floor acting crazy, getting loco 'til the lights out." This lyric connects well with how Juliet feels about all the guards & Capulets during the daytime, which is why she can't be seen with Romeo. And then they are all peaceful/quiet when darkness takes over, which is why she meets up with Romeo only at night.

Connection

Interpretation

Shakespeare made Night & Darkness a pretty important time in the play. It's when all the passionate love scenes occur. Night seems to shelter and protect the lovers.

#1. Both talk about suicide using a knife. The song specifically says "dawn" which is about the time Juliet went to Friar Laurence and threatened to kill herself if he did not help her.

#2. Day time is when Romeo and Juliet can not be together and that is usually when the conflicts occur, as the song also relates.

Connection

#1. "When the sun goes down... Time for you to shine." This lyric from the song implies that night time is when they can be free of the complications of life. It relates to the quote "Lovers can see to do their amorous rites By their own beauties, or, if love be blind,

It best agrees with night." These two quotes both imply that they are eager for darkness because that is when they feel happy.

#2. "Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light..." of the song connects with Act 3 Scene 5, because Romeo and Juliet make sure to spend the last day with each other all night.

#1. "But we got one more night" connects with Act 3 Scene 5 when Juliet says "It is not yet near day." She wants Romeo to stay longer.

#2. "Cause we are finally free tonight..." After not seeing each other for a while they finally get to be with each other for on night before Romeo has to officially leave Verona.
