Punishments and Symbolism

Dante- our dazed adventurer

Virgil- the ghostly poet

Caccio- An acquaintance of Dante's, also from Florentine

The gluttonous sinners- trying to escape the rain

Cerberus- the giant three headed dog who watches over this circle

Just like the other circles the punishment in this one corresponds to the sin. The constant raining and slush symbolizes personal degradation of a person who over indulges on worldly pleasures. At one point Virgil throws dirty slush/mud into Cerberus' mouth to calm him, this also shows that Cerberus is also gluttonous.

The Gluttonous

Historical Connections

Dante at one point meets a fellow Florentine man by the name of Caccio.

Caccio is thought to be short for Giacomo or Florentine dialect for the word pig or hog. (Also connects with the gluttony theme since pigs eat everything) They have a conversation where Caccio "foresees" the future of Florence and Italy. He talks about political and military struggles as well as other Florentine politicians whom he says Dante will meet in the deeper layers of hell.

The gluttonous are in the 3rd circle of hell. Dante uses his ex faint-ina ability to awaken in this circle. It always rains and hails in this circle, all of the sinners try to find shelter to no avail.

Quotes

"For great desire presses me to learn whether Heaven sweetens or Hell embitters them.' And he: 'They are among the blacker souls. Different vices weigh them toward the bottom, as you shall see if you descend that far." -Dante speaking to Caccio (pg119, line 81)
