It was a rare luxury and could not be grown within the boundaries of the Aztec Empire. Cacao beans were among the most valuable items and could be used as a form of payment ( 80-100 beans could be used to buy a small mantle or a canoe-full of fresh water) Sometimes, beans were frequently counterfeited by filling empty cacao shells with dirt or mud.
It was highly treasered in the Aztec empire. It had a very important symbolic value.
Sometimes it was used to make a thick drink.
Unlike hot chocolate, It was bitter, and
occasionally poeple added spices to the bitter drink.
The Aztecs believed that cacao seeds were the gift of
Quetzalcoatl, the God of wisdom. It was served as a bitter, frothy liquid, mixed with spices, wine or
corn puree.
Maize (corn) was one of the most important grains
in the Aztec Empire. The history of modern day maize started about 10,000 years ago. It was commonly used in Mexico, then it spread to the rest of the world from Mexico. Maize was also used for other things as well. It was used for making Tortillas, flat bread, and tamales.
Growing crops was a vital task for the Aztecs. Aztec farmers for the most part had only small plots to grow crops. They used different methods in different areas. Aztec farmer had no plows or carts to help them with their methods of growing crops. They only had simple tools they could use. Like a long digging stick, which had a blade at the end of the stick. This tool was used for digging the soil and scrapping the soil over to clear the weeds. They even used fertilizer to improve the content of the soil
Aztecs ate and made many different types of foods. They ate chillies, tomatoes, limes, potatoes, cashews, peanuts, sweet potatoes, talmales, tortillas, Chocolate, and many more. they hunted many animals such as turkey, duck, deer, rabits, and piegion too. They also had special occasion foods that they ate. To provide meat for these special occasons, familes might have raised turkeys or go out hunting for meat. #YUM!
