Many people are too poor to move. And even after a disaster, some want to return to the life they know best.

Places like California and Japan are well prepared for earthquakes. This makes people feel safe.

People settled in danger zones before we understood the risks. (We didn’t understand plates till the 1960’s)

A good job and a good way of life may keep you in a danger zone, even if you feel a little nervous.

Lots of us think disasters happen only to other people. We ignore the dangers and get on with our lives.

Money from Tourism

Volcanic areas attract tourists and tourists spend money.

Some of the settlements have grown into enormous cities – like Mexico and Tokyo, where could all these people move to?

Fossil Fuels

Good Soil

Plate movements can cause vegetation and animals to get buried, over millions of years they turn into coal, gas and oil, we depend on these fuels.

Today

Lava breaks down into very fertile soil.

Valuable Materials

Copper, Silver, Gold and Lead are found in extinct volcanoes

Geothermal Energy

In some areas they pump water down onto the hot rocks. It comes back as steam to heat homes or make electricity
