Case of Eric Garner

Utilitarianism

Deontology

  • practiced when one acts in a certain way to cause the least amount of wrong results for the benefit of the greatest amount of people; actions are always going to be judged depending on the consequences that will result from the resolution. (Online Guide to Ethics and Moral Philosophy, 2002, para. 2)
  • Relates to utilitarianism
  • Case where an officer put a man into a choke hold killing him
  • Eric Garner had a record of selling cigarettes illegally
  • Officer Pantaleo felt that arresting Garner would be for the greater good of the community
  • Not intending on Garner's death being a result of his actions
  • main principle is to focus on whether any of one’s actions are good or bad without taking so much in the consideration the consequences of such actions. According to this theory we must always do what is right rather than doing what is good, all actions are based on duties and obligations(Cline, 2014, para. 2 & 3)
