In 2014 SMA Chandler caused a huge uproar with his changes to the new AR 670-1. He addressed many appearance concerns including hair, rolling of the military sleeves, boots and tattoos. Many Soldiers took to social networks to express their feelings about the changes. This caused such an uproar that AR 670-1 had to be revised once again.
Command Sergeant Major Raymond F. Chandler III was born on 25 August 1962 in Whittier, California. He is married to Mrs. Jeanne Chandler. Between them, the Chandlers have six successfully grown children, eight grandchildren and one darlin’ cat, Garryowen.
SMA Chandler was sworn in on
1 March 2011. Making him the
14th Sergeant Major of the Army.
As Sergeant Major of the Army ,
Chandler served as the chief of
Staff of the United States Army's
personal adviser on all enlisted-
related matters, particularly in
areas affecting Soldier training and quality of life, including the adoption of the new Army Service Uniform, which phases out the Green Service Uniform in 2015.
He devotes majority of his time to traveling throughout the Army observing training, and talking to Soldiers and their Families.
