  • Born in Topeka, Kansas in May 1898
  • interested in art since childhood, encouraged by his mother
  • University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1992. recieved BA in art
  • Moved to Harlem, New York. Did Illustrations for important magazines associated to the Harlem Renaissance
  • heavily inspired by African culture, said that he painted things that inspired him
  • "Father of African arts"
  • went on to illustrate books, paint canvases, and murals.
  • died on February 3, 1979 at age 79

This series of murals is an exploration through African American history and culture from the days of slavery to the emancipation. I think that it is still relevant today because it tells the story of how those were once horribly oppressed and dehumanized were able to become some of the most influential artists, musicians, writers, photographers, and scholars in American history.
