The genre of Soft Rock is only 1 out of 100+ of the many 'Rock' sub-genres in existence. Out of the many 100+ Rock sub genres, some popular variations of the Rock genre also include:
'Acid Rock'- A heavy, psychedelic rock style characterized by 'long instrumental solos'.
'Alternative Rock/Indie'- Rock music that emerged from the 'underground music scene' of the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s.
'Rockabilly'- Originating in the 1950's, a genre blending the elements of Rock n' Roll and Country music.
The genre “Soft Rock” is the contemporary mix of the 2 musical genres 'Rock n' Roll' and 'Pop' styled music , which was first known to be musically introduced during the early generation of the 1950's.
Here is an Audio Snippet of the famed 1970's single, 'Baby Come Back' by the band 'Player' as an example of the Soft Rock genre during the 60's-70's 'Soft Rock' generation of music.
The most commonly played instruments used to produce the Soft Rock genre of music style normally includes the bass guitar, the electric guitar, the acoustic guitar and twelve-string guitars, while also including the drums, the piano and the musical synthesizer. Most of these instruments are featured in Soft Rock songs in order to create a more toned-down and unique musical style, whilst also incorporating beats inspired by the genre of 'Rock n' Roll' during the production of this style of music.
So in summarization, Soft Rock is one of the world's most popular genres of music in this generation to date, starting from humble beginnings in the years of the 1950's up to the current years of the late 2000's, Soft Rock as a genre is still being incorporated by many bands and artists into the production of their songs. With legendary Soft Rock bands and artists such as The Eagles, Elton John and The BeeGees, and more recent Soft Rock artists such as Coldplay, Christina Aguilera and Bon Jovi, the genre has gone a long way and after many years and decades, has still managed to keep alive up to this day.
During the 60's, songs like The Association's single 'Never my Love' and "The Beach Boys” with their song 'In My Room', were some of the most influencing and renowned Soft Rock songs during that current time period.
The genre of Soft Rock became more globally recognized during the years of the late 1960's-70's, with bands and artists such as 'Bread' with their single 'Make It With You', Air Supply's 'All out of Love' and the boy-band Player's hit single 'Baby Come Back' from the early 70's.
Today, many of the present-day bands and artists are still incorporating the genre of Soft Rock into many of their songs, with more recent artists and bands such as The Script with 'The Man Who Can't be Moved', Fergie with 'Big Girls Don't Cry' and Snow Patrol with 'Chasing Cars', all of which were originated from the early years of the 2000's (2006-2008). More recognizable names in the music industry also include the band 'One Direction' with their song 'You and I' and Avril Lavigne with “How You Remind Me” as modern-day examples of Soft Rock in today's current generation.
Here is an 'Audio Snippet' of The Script's 'The Man who Can't be Moved' as a modern day example of the Soft Rock genre in this generation today.
Before high-definition cameras, microphones, speakers and high-edge musical instruments were introduced in the early 1990's-2000's, 'predecessors' of these musical technologies were being used for the professional production of music, which not only refers to the genre of Soft Rock, but also to all other genres of music which were produced from within these time frames as well.
The musical technologies and instruments being used in the production of Soft Rock music have evolved over time. In many modern Soft Rock songs in our generation today, computer generated and pre-recorded sounds and instruments are being used more often in the creation of Soft Rock soundtracks. The development of technologies have also altered the beats and melodies of Soft Rock music, giving songs a more sharper and more precise sounding end result.
Soft rock songs from within the generations of the 90's-2000's presented a cleaner and more 'pristine' sound, compared to earlier soft rock soundtracks originating from the years of the 1970's to the 1980's, with artist's voices and instruments from the older soundtracks sounding more 'rough and retro'. Through the evolvement of technology, the music and sounds from all genres as a whole have been gradually becoming more 'clearer' over the passing generations.
