Vol XCIII, No. 311

What other crimes does Macbeth commit that are particularly loathsome, and why are they so loathsome?

Macbeth has to take full responsibility for Duncan’s murder

  • “It is concluded. Banquo, thy soul’s flight, / If it find heaven, must find it out tonight.”(3.1.143-144)
  • “The castle of Macduff I will surprise; / Seize upon Fife; give to th’edge o’th’sword / His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line.”(4.1.149-152)
  • “O, yet I do repent me of my fury / That I did kill them.” (2.3.102-103)

What other qualities of a tyrant does Macbeth exhibit?

  • Definition of a tyrant:

  • Macbeth is paranoid

  • He also commits several of these horrible acts without anyone’s advice or guidance.

  • “My noble partner / You greet with present grace and great prediction / Of noble having and of royal hope / That he seems rapt withal.” (1.3.52-55)

  • “All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis. / All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor. / All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter.” (1.3.46-48)

  • “My thought, whose murder is yet but fantastical”(1.3.152)

  • “Why do I yield to that suggestion / Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair / And make my seated heart knock at my ribs / Against the use of nature?”(1.3.147-150)

Why should you discount his remorse after Duncan’s murder?

  • After Duncan’s murder he goes on to order the murder of Banquo, Fleance and Macduff’s family.

  • He worries that Banquo will be suspicious of King Duncan's murder so his ambition to stay on the throne leads him to kill his best friend Banquo.
  • “To be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus. Our fears in Banquo stick deep, and in his royalty of nature reigns that which would be feared.”

  • His humanity is overshadowed by his strong desire.

  • His main priority is to remain king of Scotland.

Macbeth has to take the responsibility for killing Macduff's family

In what way do Shakespearean views on good kingship support your viewpoint? What was expected of a good king at that time?

  • We believe that Macbeth should take full responsibility for killing the family of Macduff as even though he physically did not kill them he ordered these innocent people dead so even though the sword that was driven through macduff’s family wasn’t his, he was the one who sent it there
  • Just

  • To act in an honorable manner.

  • Macbeth also committed treason by killing Duncan.

Macbeth has to take responsibility for killing Banquo

  • Macbeth should take full responsibility for the killing of banquo as he ordered the deed done without seeking advice from anybody else, though some may argue that the witches were the ones to tell him to kill banquo Which is false, the witches said that banquo’s children would be king and from this, macbeth saw a potential threat and tried to eliminate Banquo and his child fleance.

  • When the witches say to Banquo “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none”.
