The Age of Imperialism (1850-1914)

Imperialism is a fancy word for bully, except it can go as far as total country and sometimes world domination...

The White Mans Burden

Europeans believed that it was their duty to "civilize" people of other nations by introducing Christianity and Western culture. They generally felt that they were more superior and advanced than other countries.

"The Scramble for Africa"

Berlin Conference

So... European nations got together to decide upon the division of Africa. The entire country was divided except for Ethiopia and Liberia.

Africans did not like the way they were treated. They had absolutely no say so in how their country would be handled... However, some of the natives appreciated their additions of

  • roads
  • railroads
  • schools

They sometimes even rebelled, buyt they were no match for the Europeans.

Africans were exposed to new diseases and the division of Africa caused tension and rivalry.
