Claim: President Taft's presidency hardly impacted many of the American Ideals
Explanation: As mentioned numerous times, President Taft was lacking effort thorughout his presidency. He could've put more effort during reform matters, but chose to withdraw during many of them. However, Taft had more of an impact after his presidency as a chief justice.
Claim: Taft's "Dollar Diplomacy" created more negative impacts than positive impacts on U.S foreign Policy
Evidence: Relationships with Central America
Explanation: Taft's attempt to gain advantages in C. America only angered its citizens. In the case with Nicaragua, the U.S loaned their banks money to pay their debts. However, in turn, the U.S was able to gain control of the nation's banks. This angered their citizens to revolt, causing the U.S to intervene. With tensions strained from Roosevelt's presidency, the Pan-American Conference was called to reduce U.S influence.
Claim: Besides Taft's dollar diplomacy, he severely lacked in Foreign Policy
Evidence: "Intervention" in Mexico
Explanation: With a revolution throughout Mexico, Taft sent troops to protect U.S investments. However, he backed off after being dissuaded by Congress. Taft left the conflict with Mexico for his successor. This showed his lack of confidence, a characteristic found throughout most of his presidency.
As mentioned before, Taft lacked in Foreign Policy, and what he had accomplished (Dollar Diplomacy) only had temporary positive impacts. It was still an effort nonetheless that made the difference between "Below Average" and "Failure"
If President Taft would've showed effort, then he'd be evaluated with "Below Average" rather than "Failure." But his lack of passion to be President affected his leadership as he chose to back away from many issues. Being inexperienced and indecisive, in his position, it would have been best to at least do something.
Compared to other Presidents, Taft lacked many leadership skills. Some notable characteristics of him during presidency was inactivity, lack of confidence and effort. However, those cahracterisitcs could not describe him as a chief justice. In that position, he caref
Claim: Taft's trust busting started strong in helping the U.S, however, as time passed, it became evident that Taft lacked effort
Evidence: The Taft Administration and Roosevelt's Evaluation
Explanation: Under the Taft Administration, many large companies such as Standard Oil were involved in numerous cases. However, as Taft moved to U.S Steel, he undergone criticism by Roosevelt who claimed Taft didn't know the difference between "good" and "bad" trusts. Taft then began to withdraw from trust-busting and resumed his recreational activities.
Claim: Taft's inexperience during presidency hardly affected other affairs besides trust busting
Evidence: Payne-Aldrich Tariff
Explanation: Taft's "efforts" towards tariff reform hardly impacted tariffs themselves. The Payne-Aldrich Tariff did little to lower tariffs and when presented with the bill, Taft signed it into law. Stating it was "the best tariff bill the Republican ever passed."
As with Foreign Policy, Taft was also lacking in Domestic Afffairs. Any real effort was through trust busting, and even then he withdrew with that. Althought even with little effort, it was effort in one of the biggest issues at the time econimically.
