What are the most Important Causes of the Crusades?

These religious groups were impacted socially and economically

The most important causes for the Crusades were conquering Jerusalem and allowing a secure pilgrim pass to the Holy Land.

  • Jews were massacred without mercy during the first Crusade in Germany. Jews tried to hide into bishops, but the Christians broke in and killed them.

Muslims

Muslims died and were tortured by Christians

  • In 1191, King Richard decided to kill all the 2700 Muslim prisoners because it was taking Saladin too long to sign the exchange treaty of 200,000 gold.

  • Between 1187 and 1188, King Richard decided to higher the taxes to the common people to have more money to have a bigger Crusading Army. The common people became more poor because they had to pay more taxes.

There were many different ESPCG causes, but some were recurrent such as Politics and Culture

  • To reassert power
  • Pope
  • To reconquer lost lands
  • Jerusalem, Edessa, and parts of the Byzantine Empire

  • Visiting Holy Lands

Jews were socially affected.

- Due to the Crusades, the Jews were forced to leave their towns and go live in ghettos, which separated the community of Jews and other people.

  • Jews couldn't socialize with other cultures, Jews were of low social status

Christians:

Christians were economically affected.

- In 1192, merchants came back to Europe bringing new type of products such as cotton, pepper, melons, sesame seeds, and apricots

  • New products for the Christians, and more rations for them.
  • Overall, we learned that in order to succeed in group work collaboration is fundamental. In order to succeed we must:
  • communicate
  • calm
  • finding solutions to problems
  • collaborate
  • help each other when they need help
  • be responsible
  • respect due dates
  • do everything at the best of your abilities

  • 2700 Muslims were killed because King Richard was tired of waiting for Saladin.

  • Christians:

  • Kind Richard decided to tax the Europeans to finance the third crusade.
