In the myth, the twins are symbols which personify good and evil: Good Twin was born normally, helped the Eagwehoewe people, and brought good things to the world such as dog, rabbit, squirrel, bird, deer, etc, while Evil twin burst through his mother's side and killed her, harmed the Eagwehoewe people, and brought dangerous and destructive things to the world such as snake, wolf, mountains, raccoons, etc. In Native mythology, twins can be viewed as representing the capability of any one human being to be both kind and cruel, explaining why people can have both good and evil natures and behave in both creative and destructive ways.

Another theme is good and evil.

The significance of this is that the Iroquois regarded the Earth’s entirety as a sacred place because the creator, Sky Woman, was buried in the Earth. Since the world was created on the back of the Great Tortoise by Sky Woman, the Great Tortoise is a symbol of the Earth which is regarded as a sacred totem by the Iroquois people today.
