Activity Time

Each table group will select one group (producer, consumer, or detrivores and decomposers) to create a

poster and present on.

The poster and presentation should focus on each group's role in a given ecosystem. Explain their significance and how they help keep habitats in balance.

You may use your textbooks and laptops for research.

Questions 1-4

These titles are given to organisms based on how they obtain their food in their ecosystem.

Niche: The function or position of an organism or population within an ecological community.

(The specific role each species plays in their ecosystem).

Consumers

Producers

Although green plants are able to produce their own food through photosynthesis, animals must obtain their food through the consumption of other organisms.

3 types of consumers

These organisms are green plants that are able to produce their own food by using sunlight and materials from the non-living environment.

The process that these plants produce their own food is

known as photosynthesis.

Herbivores: Plant Eaters

Carnivores: Meat Eaters

Omnivores: Consumes both

What are some examples of each type of consumer?

Producers (plants) are key as

they produce sugar, starches, and oxygen.

What are some examples of producers that you would find on land and in water?

Detrivores and Decomposers

Not all plants and animals are eaten. Some simply pass away due to natural causes. Deceased organisms become food for detrivores and decomposers.

Detrivores: Organisms that feed on large bits of dead and decaying plants and animals.

Decomposers: Organisms that obtain energy by breaking down and consuming the final remains of living things.

Bacteria and fungi break

down these waste materials.
