Selecting a GOOD Precedent

Precedent Uses

City backdrop on the riverfront for a site

  • You can select a bad one?
  • You need to UNDERSTAND and CONVEY THE IDEAS and CONCEPTS behind the work
  • The goal of precedent research in architecture is to have an understanding of what has come before, and use that knowledge to help define and develop your design concepts.
  • Using a precedent creates a reference between your design and another one
  • It can show you how to solve examples, details
  • It can teach you about the architecture of the other place and help develop design ideas for your space

Calm Ocean for a site

Let's Try Some Examples

  • Examples?!?!
  • I thought we were looking at precedents
  • Examples and precedents are used interchangeably.

Calm lake side retreat for a site

But Each site it inherently different

Yes, but no matter what structure gets built the water becomes an outdoor experience for each setting

Relationships

  • Water promotes an exterior activity for the site in question
  • Proportionally, the structure would be a mire spec compared to the backdrop the site is expressing
  • All are in a similar local, close to the water

Conclusion

What is a Precedent ?

What do they have in common?

  • All are near water
  • Water is the reoccuring theme
  • Concept: water is a natural element that no matter where the site is it can be enjoyed and enhanced by the water characteristics
  • Something done or said that serves as an example to authorize or justify a subsequent act of the same of analogous kind.....
  • Thank you Merriam Webster Dictionary

Why use a Precedent?

Architecture

  • Can create meaning in your design for not only you, but the client
  • Helps to better communicate an idea you are trying to achieve by finding an example of one that already does
