Subroutines

You may be given a question that asks you to utilise a pre-existing sub routine, if so this is the symbol!

Decisions

Decisions are made using the diamond i.e. an IF statement or loop

Start/End

✳✱*

Action/Process

Whenever you do something with the data you use the rectangle i.e. multiplying two numbers

ALWAYS use this symbol at the start and end of any diagram

Input/Output

Any time you ask for data, or display (print) it, you use the parallelogram

You will normally get marks even if this is the only thing you do!

Make a flow diagram

Take your swimming pool pseudocode and turn it into flow

Flow

Sometimes in your exam the question will give you the option of using either pseudo or flow

Other questions WILL tell you to create a flow diagram

Let's remind ourselves of the symbols used in flow diagrams

Lesson Objectives

To understand the symbols used when creating flow diagrams

To become more comfortable in creating flow diagrams for a given problem

Revise, Recap, Review

3 security measures that could be implemented to prevent un-authorised access to a network

2 types of switching to used to send data

1 explanation why adding more RAM won't always increase performance

Pre-exam revision - flow

Problem

The volume of a swimming pool can be calculated by using the following formula:

Volume = Length x Width x Depth

Write the pseudocode solution to calculate volume

Challenge

Hex() is a function that accepts a decimal number between 0 and 15 and returns the corresponding hexadecimal value

Task

Create a flow diagram that accepts a number between 0-255 and returns the hexadecimal equivalent. I.E an input of 255 would return the value FF
