The YMCA of Greater Dayton Here and Now

The YMCA of Greater Dayton is aware that employees utilize personal and YMCA-supplied cellular phones for business purposes. At the same time, these devices are a distraction in the workplace. To ensure the effectiveness of meetings, employees are asked to turn all devices off and refrain from text messaging. Or, on the occasion of an emergency that requires immediate attention, the device may be carried to the meeting on vibrate mode.

Employees are encouraged to leave personal devices outside of the work environment. It is recognized that there may be occasions where personal communication not incidental to business may be unavoidable, however this should be kept to a minimum. In order to maintain employee privacy and potential exposure to members, key pads are to be kept locked at all times while cellular phones are at work.

The YMCA Of Greater Dayton Timeline

1988 - The Central branch YMCA was sold to McCormack Baron for a revitalization program.  Agreements were made so that members could use other facilities during this time.  These members who remained during this time period are known as "Hard Hat" members.

1992 - The Central branch building reopened as The Landing and the Downtown YMCA.  The YMCA reacquired its own space in the facility.

1940 - Successful campaign for the "Prisoner of War" funds and World Service

1941 - Local U.S.O. organized to provide entertainment to the troops

1946 - Fairborn YMCA was established as part of the Dayton YMCA.  The branch was transferred to the Greene County YMCA in 1996.

1967 - Town and Country branch which was serving several communities began to phase out gradually.  Other units would replace the branch: Southwest (Jefferson Township, Miamisburg, West Carrollton), Northeast branch and the Northwest location.

        - Gymnastic programming at the Central branch saw an increase in female participation. Instruction was given in the six events used in Olympic men's competition and the four in women's competition.

1968 - Indoor running track was built in the Central branch building.

      - Committee was established to address the urban crisis and provide programming to areas in need.

1957 - Dayton Y became a Metropolitan Organization with the Central branch housing administrative leadership for the Association.

    - Kettering YMCA, Sinclair College and Camp Kern were no longer departments and became individual branches.

1962 - George and Mirian Steller dedicated 4.4 acres to the Y for a Kettering YMCA.  This is the home of the Current South YMCA which opened in 1964.

1965 - Camp Kern dedicated Elk Lake and The O.J. Bard Nature building among other new structures. Outdoor Education programming ran for 8 weeks.

1966 - 11 acres at the Southwest corner of Olive Road and Shiloh Springs were purchased for what would become the Northwest Family Branch. The facility was sold in 1991 to a private company.  Through partnerships many programs were run through the community: Maria Joseph pool, Jewish Community Center (now known as the United Theological Seminary), Salem Church of God and a small office on Martindale Road in Union.

       - Emphasis on  poverty programming and serving impoverished youngsters utilizing federal funds.  One program included Operation-Latch Key which lead to our current School Age Child Care programs.

      - Sinclair College left the YMCA and became Sinclair Community College a public controlled institution.

History of the YMCA Movement

History of the YMCA Movement

Whatever your responsibilities within the YMCA, your job is important as we work together for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. These areas of focus are based off the YMCA Mission to put Judeo-Christian principals into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

The Y is a cause-driven organization focused on youth development, for healthy living and for social responsibility. That’s because a strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.

The goal of the YMCA of Greater Dayton is to consistently attract, develop, motivate, and retain the most competent employees possible to aid the YMCA in the achievement of its mission and objectives. We are looking to you to practice, instill and model – in spirit, mind and body – the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
