Why Should We Care?

Charts And Graphs

Linfen

  • We should care because there is a health issue and many people living there are sick and could cause many more diseases
  • Blue is better
  • Red is the worst
  • Also the air pollution is causing heart problems, people could die and there could be less producers to exract the coal decreasing energy supply
  • We should care because we are soon going to have to deal with this problem our selves.

Abel's Prediction

If nothing is done about this soon the air will be so toxic that people will not be able to breath it.

Why its happening

The best case scenario is coal mines shutdown and the people move away (Let the air clear).

I think the government will not give it much attention until the pollution starts killing people at a much large rate.

- The development of china could have contributed to the pollution because they don't have very regulated factories so the pollution spreads

- Developed countries arent really helping, they've tried but they haven't continued

Sources

The main thing that should be done is have companies stop mining there.

If I was the leader of China I would either ban mining in that area for a while or raise the prices so people will not buy it.

Joseph's Prediction

In terms of air quality, the World Bank has stated that 16 out of 20 of the world's worst polluted cities are in China.

The State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) has branded Linfen as having the worst air quality in the country.

If anything the US should stop buying coal from there

I think people should use other sources of energy thats less polluting such as solar and hydroelectric energy

I think if China and developed countries dont do anything about the pollution then that area could be unsuitable to live in and then it will be hard to extract the coal. This is a problem because coal is China's main resource of energy and Linfen is a coal mine city.

In the 1960 agriculture was at a 60 percent in

china. That percent decreased as new machinery was introduced. Linfen has moved on to coal mining.

Questions We Have

The air quality in linfen is so bad that breathing the air is like smoking three packs of cigarettes each day

kevin's Prediction

What is the average number of people that die each day in Linfen from pollution?

I agree with Abel if nothing is done

most of the air wouldn't be

breathable causing most of the life to die, or move habitats

How many people in Linfen have heart/lung related diseases?

Developement Impact

  • Rapid development in industry has led to the development of hundreds of unregulated coal mines, steel factories and refineries which have not only polluted indiscriminately but have also diverted agricultural water sources.
  • Local clinics are seeing growing cases of bronchitis, pneumonia, and lung cancer dew to high levels of pollution.
  • The children of Shanxi Province also have high rates of lead poisoning.
  • A growing number of local deaths in recent years have been linked to these overwhelming pollution levels.
