The Negative effects of Stereotyping on Society

by Erin Volz

How do stereotypes affect how the average person lives their life?

“Treat a man as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he could be, and he will become what he should be.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

What common stereotypes might society believe?

How do people change to fit society's expectations?

In a research experiment done at Stanford University, students did poorly on a stereotyped test. However, when the same test was given without any negative stereotypes, the same students preformed well and equally.

The same study found learning of stereotype threat helps eliminate these issues.

Common stereotypes surround age, race, religion, and gender

How does making assumptions affect Society?

What is Stereotyping?

How can we stop making assumptions about those around us?

What shapes the way we prejudge others?

Stereotyping tears people apart and enforces detrimental ideas

"A stereotype is a rigid, oversimplified, often exaggerated belief that is applied both to an entire social category of people and to each individual within it. Stereotypes form the basis for prejudice, which in turn is used to justify discrimination and attitudes. They can be positive as well as negative."

People may only see what they are prepared to see, so be ready to view others as they are.

Sometimes we think and believe things to be true only because they are commonly believed

"Positive" stereotypes are often called counter-types, but are just as harmful

Are minority groups the only ones who are stereotyped?

Is stereotyping taught?

New York University found 3 year old children all preformed equally and gaps were formed over years with race and gender

No, even whole nations are victims of stereotyping

Our first impression is what we are conditioned to believe, our second is our mind making a conscious decision.

Why do we see ourselves differently because of others views?

When one is told lies long enough they begin to believe them. This can lead to self-fulfilling prophecies.
