Chapter 5

-More information given on Gatsby's background. Find out about rags to riches story.

-Introduction to Dan Cody and James Gatz.

-Tom starts to become curious of Gatsby.

-Gatsby kisses Daisy.

-Gatsby and Daisy have a meeting and see each other for the first time in years.

-Gatsby offers Nick a job through his business, but Nick declines.

Symbols

Gatsby's clothes- Gatsby's clothes are a key symbol in this chapter. They are a symbol because Gatsby shows a bunch of his clothes and things to Daisy in this chapter when she comes over to his house. When Daisy sees all of Gatsby's shirts, she sobs due to the niceness of the shirts. Gatsby's clothes symbolize his wealth, but also suspicion because it is not clear to where Gatsby got all of his clothes and money. "They're such beautiful shirts," she sobbed, her voice muffled in thick folds. "It make me sad because I've never seen such- such beautiful shirts before."(92).

Gatsby's House- Gatsby's house is a key symbol from this chapter. Nick, Daisy, and Gatsby all go to Gatsby's house in this chapter. Daisy is amazed by the niceness of Gatsby's house. The house is remarkable. The house symbolizes the mysterious wealth of Gatsby.

"That huge place there?" she cried pointing. "Do you like it?" "I love it, but I don't see how you live there all alone."(90)

Cultural Allusion

The American Dream-A key cultural allusion because the American Dream is seen is Gatsby through his rags to riches story. The American Dream consists of working hard, and gaining riches due to this work despite previous conditions.

Symbols

Flowers-This symbol is shown in the end of the chapter when Gatsby kisses Daisy. Daisy is described as a flower that is now bloomed when she kisses Gatsby. Gatsby and Daisy is a flower that has now fully bloomed due to this kiss. "Then he kissed her. At his lips' touch she blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete."(111)

Gatsby-Gatsby is a key symbol in this section. He is a symbol for the American Dream due to his rags to riches story that led to his wealth. "I suppose he'd had the name ready for a long time, even then. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people- his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself" (98). This quote shows that Gatsby did not start out with money in his life.

-Nick learns more about Gatsby.

-Meyer Wolfsheim is introduced.

-Nick and Jordan start to become suspicious of Gatsby.

-More information on Daisy is revealed and Gatsby wants to have tea with Daisy.

Cultural Allusions

Baseball-Wolfheim mentions to Nick that he was the one who rigged the 1919 World Series. This largely surprises Nick. He wonders how he did it and why he isn't in jail. This was a huge deal. Baseball was very popular at this time and a huge part of the culture during this time. The fact that Wolfheim did this is crazy. This rigging was known as the Black Sox Scandal and one of the biggest sports scandals in history.

Gangsters and Racketeering- This is key in this chapter due to Meyer Wolfsheim. Nick finds out in this chapter that Wolfsheim rigged the World Series. This is an example of Racketeering. During this time period, Gangsters and Racketeering was big with people such as Al Capone, and it is shown in this chapter with Wolfsheim.

Symbols

Wolfsheim's cuffs-Wolfsheim's cuffs are a key symbol in this chapter. Wolfsheim says that they are made of human molars.They are a sign that something is going on with Wolfsheim. He must have used someone's teeth for those cuffs. Therefore, these cuffs make Wolfsheim suspicious. They also make Gatsby suspicious due to his affiliation with Wolfsheim. "I see you're looking at my cuff buttons." I hadn't been looking at them, but I did now. They were composed of oddly familiar pieces of ivory. "Finest specimens of human molars," he informed me."(72)

Gatsby-Gatsby is a key symbol in this chapter due to the suspiciousness that arises because of his association with Wolfsheim. Wolfsheim largely shows that he is a suspicious person due to his rigging of the world series and his cuffs that are made out of human molars. Gatsby's association with Wolfsheim could mean that Gatsby is involved in criminal activity. Gatsby symbolizes mysteriousness in this chapter. "Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he's a gambler." Gatsby hesitated, then added cooly: "He's the man who fixes the World's Series back in 1919."(73).

-Tom and Nick go to car place to see Tom's girl, Myrtle.

-The Valley of Ashes is introduced.

-Wilson is introduced.

-A party occurs and Myrtle is punched in the face.

Chapter 7

-Nick seems to now have Daisy.

-No more Gatsby parties.

-Tom becomes frustrated due to Gatsby and Daisy situation.

-Tom, Gatsby, Daisy, and Jordan, and Nick go to town.

-Myrtle is hit by car and dies.

Automobiles- Automobiles play a role in this chapter. Myrtle and Wilson are introduced, and they both work with cars. Cars played a key role in society during this time period. They brought a new sense of freedom to the people.They changed society and gave people new lives and jobs.

The Valley of Ashes- The Valley of Ashes is introduced during this chapter. Tom and Nick visit Myrtle and Wilson at the car place in this chapter. Myrtle and Wilson live in the Valley of Ashes. It can be seen as the working class area and a symbol for the Midwest at the time. "This is a valley of ashes- a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses ad chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air"(23).

Automobiles-Automobiles are largely shown in this chapter. Nick and Tom go to see Myrtle and Wilson at their work which is a car dealership. Automobiles provided people with new jobs and a new sense of transportation. People could now go places that they could never go to before. Automobiles symbolize this new sense of freedom, and the impact that they had on society during this time period. "One of the three shops it contained was for rent and another was an all-night restaurant, approached by a trail of ashes; the third was a garage- Repairs. George B. Wilson. Cars bought and sold.- and I followed Tom inside." (24-25).

Chapter 1

-Roaring 20's-Women are shown drinking and doing different things than they had done in years prior to the 20's in this chapter. People were now acting different, and a new way of life took over the young people in America. Women wore flappers and people would now go out to places. This new style is seen in this chapter.

Cultural Allusion

Illegal Activities in the 1920's-In this chapter, Gatsby is found to have drug stores in which he makes money. These drugstores are really bootlegging businesses. This is illegal. There was a large amount of bootlegging businesses and things that went on like this during this time period partially due to prohibition. Illegal activities were very common in the 1920's.

The eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg- The eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg is a key symbol in this chapter. As Tom, Daisy, Nick, Gatsby, and Jordan go to town, they have concerns regarding gas. The eyes are said to be guiding them and they brought them to remember to gas so that they did not run out. The eyes guided them in different times in the chapter. The eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg could symbolize guidance. "Then as Doctor T.J. Eckleburg's faded eyes came into sight down the road, I remembered Gatsby's caution about gasoline."(122)

New York City- New York City is a symbol in this chapter because Tom, Daisy, Nick, Gatsby, and Jordan all go here in the chapter. While they are in town, they are different arguments that occur regarding Daisy, Nick, and Tom. The arguments are over Gatsby loves Tom or Gatsby. These arguments eventually lead to other key events that happen later on in this chapter. The city is also described by Jordan as being a very intereting place. She says that the city can bring all sorts of interesting things. The city shows to bring interesting things in this chapter. "Those big movies around Fiftieth Street are cool," suggested Jordan. "I love New York on summer afternoons when every one's away. There's something very sensuous about it- overripe, as if all sorts of funny fruits were going to fall into your hands." (125)

The Prohibition Era- The Prohibition Era is largely shown in this chapter with all of the alcohol consumption at Gatsby's party. Gatsby's party shows the amount of drinking that took place during this era despite alcohol being illegal.

Parties/alcohol consumption- Parties and alcohol consumption are symbols in this chapter. A party occurs during this chapter. There is alcohol consumption at this party even though it was during prohibition. Alcohol consumption and parties are shown as symbols for the ignorance of the law during prohibition. "The bar is in full swing, and floating rounds of cocktails permeate the garden outside"(40).

Gatsby's library- Gatsby's library is a key symbol in this chapter. Nick has an encounter with the Owl-eyed man in the library. They are both impressed with the library. The Owl-Eyed man is surprised that the library actually has real books. The library could possibly symbolize Gatsby. "A stout, middle-aged man, with enormous owl-eyed spectacles, was sitting somewhat drunk on the edge of a great table, staring with unsteady concentration at the shelves of books."(45).

Jazz age-The jazz age is a cultural allusion in this chapter. Jazz music is being played at Gatsby's party. This book takes place during the jazz age and when jazz began to rise.

Cultural Reference

Racism-While at dinner, Tom shows racism while he is talking about a book. He talks about worries that he has regarding the white race being taken over. He says that the white race is the dominant race and that the white race needs to watch out for other races. Tom wants white supremacy to be maintained. Tom shows the racism that was present during this time.

World War I-Nick mentions that he participated in World War I. This was a large event that was going on in the world during this time. It introduced a new style of warfare and was an important event in society during the time.

East egg- The East egg is a symbol in this chapter because the East egg is introduced.The East egg can be seen as New York City. Tom, who Nick visits in the chapter, lives in the East egg. "Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water, and the history of the summer really begins on the evening I drove out there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanans" (5). The East egg can be seen as having older money, meaning that the area has been wealthy for a good amount of time. The wealthiness of the East egg is shown in this chapter through the description of the nice houses and the history of the area.

Tom Buchanan- Tom Buchanan is a key symbol in this chapter. He is introduced in this chapter. He is a very intimidating person. He is rich and very masculine. "The front was broken by a line of French windows, glowing now with reflected gold and wide open to the war windy afternoon, and Tom Buchanan in riding clothes was standing with his legs apart on the front porch"(6). He is seen as a symbol of old money that is present in the East egg. Nick goes to Tom's house in this chapter, and sees how nice it is.

Chapter 8

-Gatsby remains in pursuit for Daisy.

-Wilson thinks that Gatsby killed Myrtle.

-Gatsby is killed by Wilson.

Chapter 9

-Nick reflects on what has happened.

-Daisy and Tom are gone.

-Gatsby's funeral occurs.

-Last chapter of book.

-Wilson- A key symbol in this chapter, symbolizing revenge and anger due to him murdering Gatsby. Wilson ends up killing himself after he kills Gatsby. "It was after we started with Gastby toward the house that the garderner saw Wilson's body a little way off in the grass, and the holocaust was complete."(162)

-Gatsby's House- Key symbol in this chapter. Wilson murders Gatsby at his house while he is in his pool. The house symbolizes the American Dream. Gatsby dies in the American Dream. "There was a faint, barely perceptible movement of the water as the fresh flow from one end urged its way toward the drain at the other. With little ripples that were hardly the shadow of waves, the laden matress moved irregularly down the pool."(162)

Symbols

Owl-Eyed Man- A key symbol in this chapter because he is one of the only people that shows up to Gatsby's funeral. He symbolizes truth."I looked around. It was the man with owl-eyed glasses whom I had found marvelling over Gatsby's books in the library one night three months before."(174)

Henry Gatz- Gatsby's father who is one of the only people to show up at the funeral. He symbolizes true love, rather than the others who abandoned him. "After changing my clothes I went next door and found Mr.Gatz walking up and down excitedly in the hall."(172)
