Hyperbole

"Sharing all the world" is a hyperbole because you can't really share the entire world. It means to spread knowledge and culture from throughout the globe. By sharing cultures and knowledge we can become less ignorant and understand other people more.

Ethos

John Lennon was a household name because of the Beatles. Many people looked up to him because of his old band which allowed him to have some credibility with the public.

"You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will be as one"

Metaphors

"Imagine there's no countries"

A world without countries is a world without borders. Taking away the borders also creates one united world that lives in peace and harmony.

"a brotherhood of man"

Pathos

This quote talks about how amazing things would be if we were all together in a "brotherhood". That would allow people to treat people like family and have animosity be limited.

Repetition

Lennon uses pathos by having listeners imagine an ideal world with peace and happiness for all. Many people want at least some form of world peace and this song does a good job of making people think about it and what they are doing in their daily life that could prevent this from happening.

"Imagine all the people living life in peace"

Repetition of the word "imagine" allows Lennon to get his point across. He repeats the word to entice people to "imagine" a world where there are no problems and world peace. By using repetition he drives his point that this world will most likely never happen so that listeners will feel for the state the world is in.

Imagine by John Lennon

"No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man"

Logos

Lennon uses logos to say that most problems and wars start because of religion, greed, possessions, and culture. At the time this song came out, the Vietnam War was going on so he used this piece of information to get the public to listen.

Song Effectiveness

Author's Argument

This song is considered one of, if not the most, meaningful songs ever written. It came out in 1971 in a time where there was war, hatred and bigotry spreading like wildfire. This song encouraged many people to go fix something. It can still apply heavily to the issues we have today since not much has really changed with intercontinental and domestic relations.

The song is written by John Lennon and encourages listeners or readers to imagine a world without religion, hunger, divisions, and many other issues plaguing our world. He is arguing that if we all come together, then we can make strides towards solving our problems. It is a feel good song that transports listeners to a world where no problems exist and everyone can live as one.
