Analysis of cult of personality in the writing

How does the government use Cult of Personality?

Orwell decided to use Cult of Personality in 1984 to illustrate how people can become blind to the governments wrong actions because they have given them someone to worship. Orwell used this because when he wrote this in 1949 WW2 was just ending. He used Hitler as a model for big brother and how his influence over the people to demonstrate how one person promising something to a group of people can make them go blind to the harmful actions. By doing this the audience is able to see how by doing this there is a split in society. Those who are completely for the Cult of Personality and those against it but are to afraid to speak out for fearing execution. The audience is completely immersed in how the people of society are treated that it is like they are physically there. Orwell was implying that by having a Cult of Personality the citizens live in a fear or daydream and can not think for themselves.

The government in 1984 uses this by putting Big Brother posters everywhere and putting Big Brother’s face on everything, such as coins. The government uses Big Brother as their heroic public image and their symbol of authority so that the citizens of Oceania can idolize him. When people look at the image, they see power and that affects their lives. No one has ever seen Big Brother and that leaves room for people create any sort of image of him and can believe his is truly “watching”. The purpose of Big Brother was to make sure everyone follows the rules. With the “BIG BROTHER IS ALWAYS WATCHING” slogan, people are in fear of breaking the rules because they know what the consequences are. I believe Big Brother was very effective. Majority of people followed the rules and looked at Big Brother as their savior.

Similarities in 1984 and the real world

Cult of Personality

Big brother and uncle Sam are similar because they both represent the government and where seen as the face of it.

wars where also seen as a way to peace specially during WW1 (the war to end all wars). This is similar to 1984 because people believe that the only way to peace is through war thats why they are constantly at war with someone else.

Another similarity is in north Korea ,because Kim jong un acts like the best leader his citizens could ever have and he has his citizens blinded into thinking that they have the best life and and the best leader even though they have a terrible life, just like most civilians in 1984.

Definitions

Totalitarianism- A system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state.

Cult of Personality- When an individual or group of people use media or propaganda to create a heroic public image for people to idolize.

How The cult of personality connects to 1984

In 1984 Big Brother is given a cult of personality. The people look at his posters and see superiority. The effect this has is that people look at his image and think of authority.

The fact that they have never seen Big Brother allows the people to think of the ideal image of him. This makes him seem all powerful and relates the the fact that everyone thinks he is always watching.
