James II

Hanoverian England

GEORGE II (1727-1760)

When Charles II died, James II became the king.

He had 2 daughters Mary and Anne, who were Protestants and they lived in Holland.

Mary was married with William of Orange, while Anne wasn't married.

Then James married Mary d’este, and they had a son.

This baby boy was baptized according to the Catholic rite.

Parliament splits into two groups:

After the death of Queen Anne in 1714, George I of Hanover succeeded as the first king of the Hanoverian dynasty.

George didn’t speak English, so he couldn’t ruled alone, in fact he delegated Robert Walpole, who has the title of Prime Minister and during his reign was fought the Seven Years war.

During this period, the American had accepted to pay high taxes because they needed the supporter of English army against French.

Whigs:maintained that James could not be the king of England because he hadn't taken the Test Act,

Tories: maintained that James had a legitimate right to become the king of England, because he was the first heir.

The reign of Queen Anne

The reign of Queen Anne was marked by political controversy between Whigs and Tories.

The rebellion was put down and the Act of Union merged the Scottish and English Parliaments into one.

Glorious Revolution or Bloodless Revolution

He signed Test Act, that was a law that established that if a person wanted to perform a public function he had to show that he belong to the Anglican Church.

In 1688 Mary II and William accept to became the Queen and the King of England, and this compromise was called Glorious Revolution.

With the help of the Irish, James made an attempt to regain the throne, but he was defeated.

Mary II and William reigned from 1688 to 1694 and after signed Bill of Rights.

With this compromise was born a constitutional government.
