Problems with Privacy

For Me...

For Others...

Why does it Matter?

Do you like it when people overhear your conversations with others, and watch your every move?

  • I expect to have the right of privacy as an American Citizen
  • I want to feel safe and secure
  • I do not want others to have access of my personal information
  • It's MINE

In our generation, almost everything is put online

Specific Limitations

Didn't think so...

56% of Americans have set up a social media account

22% of those American use their choice of social media multiple times a day

25% of Facebook users don't bother with their privacy settings on their profile

Why is it Relevant Today

Precedent

For Me...

For Others...

What is Precedent?

  • Because I have the RIGHT to privacy, I want to be confident in my security and what I am doing online
  • I do not want to be watched or monitored

Precedent for Protections of these Rights:

  • PII (personal identification information) is personal...
  • and something that shouldn't be bought, sold, or manipulated and stolen
  • People need to understand the importance of keeping their info private...
  • and the danger of it being stolen
  • Identity Theft

Article 12 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

"No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home, or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation"...

And...

"Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks..."

In common law legal systems, a precedent or or authority is a principle or rule established in a previous legal case that is either binding on or persuasive for a court or other tribunal when deciding subsequent cases with similar issues or facts.

(RULE OF LAW)

Examples:

  • "Biggest Cyber Fraud Case in History" (Visa credit card)
  • South Carolina Data Breach (2012)
  • Target Data Breach (2013)
