Comparison of Greek and Egyptian Mythology

Greek and Egyptian Gods and Goddesses

Even though the Greek and Egyptians shared some of the same ideas of the types of gods and goddesses they worshipped, they used different names for them and the stories of their origins were different. Both cultures used the stories of their gods and goddesses to explain the mysteries of creation and other parts of nature. Each civilization developed gods that were a representation of their society and culture.

Gods of the Sun

Greek God of the Sun

Egyptian God of the Sun

Apollo

He was a handsome, strong and youthful god with impressive golden hair. He also owned the precious gift of prophecy, given to him by his father Zeus in his infancy

Ra

He was the most important god of the ancient Egyptians.

The ancient Egyptians believed that Ra was swallowed every night by the sky goddess Nut, and was reborn every morning.

Goddess and God of Wisdom

Egyptian God of Wisdom

Greek Goddess of Wisdom

Athena

She was the goddess who taught mankind various skills such as weaving and sewing to the women and agriculture and metallurgy to men. She was always giving precious advice and stood by on any danger. Athena protected the heroes as they went out to war and saved them on their coming back.

Thoth - He was the god of writing and knowledge.

The ancient Egyptians believed that Thoth gave them the gift of hieroglyphic writing. Thoth was also connected with the moon.

Gods of War

Greek God of War

Egyptian God of War

Ares

Horus

He is probably most well-known as the protector of the ruler of Egypt.

The Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was the 'living Horus'

Just like his mother Hera, Ares had a very difficult character to deal with and was therefore rather unpopular among the other deities and mankind. For this reason, no Greek city wanted to have him as its patron. He often had conflicts and fights with his half-sisters Artemis and Athena, especially during the Trojan War.

Goddess of Love

Greek Goddess of Love

Egyptian Goddess of Love

Aphrodite

She was the most attractive goddess of Mount Olympus. She was the goddess of Love, Beauty and Eternal Youth, arousing desire to gods and humans as well as birds and beasts. In addition, she was connected to the death/rebirth of nature and human beings.

Hathor

She was the wife of Horus, and was sometimes thought of as the mother of the pharaoh.
