Pluto's Moons

Pluto offically has 4 moons: Charon, Nix, Hydra and S/2011 P 1. Charon was discovered in 1978 by an astronomer James Christy, Nix and Hydra were discovered in 2005 and S/2011 P 1 was indentified in 2011 by the Hubble Telescope. The Plutonian moons are unusally close to the plant unlike other plants moons. The Plutonian System appears to be "largly empty but highly compacted", although scientist and astronamers have said it is possible that there is a posdsiblity that there is more objects out there, maybe even including a ring system, this yet to be proven.

Demoted

After intense years of debating scientist and astronomers have came to an agreement in 2006 that Pluto is no longer a planet! There are now only 8 planets in our solar system and pluto is now known as a Dwarf Planet the only reconised Dwarf Planet in our Solar system. Astronomers have argued since 1990's wether to demote Pluto and after 16 Years of debating it happened but out of the 10,000 of professional astronomers only 424 were allowed to vote. After this decision three main categories were established for objects in our solar system:

  • Planets: The eight worlds from Mercury to Neptune.
  • Dwarf Planets: Pluto and any other round object that "has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and is not a satellite."
  • Small Solar System Bodies: All other objects orbiting the Sun.

Caltech researcher Mike Brown stated in an interview shortly after the decision was made stated that "There will be hundreds of Dwarf Planets". He has already found dozens of object out in space that come under this category.
