Pros

Cons

The K1000 comes with pre-defined reporting tools, software packages can be uploaded and deployed on a schedule, you can meter the use of software on machines, view almost every specification of a machine in the field down to who was last logged into the system, etc.

• The level of detail provided on hardware and software pieces for K1000 was amazing.

• The systems require minimum additional resources to run effectively.

• The K1000 integrates many features for asset management, software distribution, patch management removing some of the overhead of manually applying this mix of tasks

• The labelling of devices was an added bonus feature as devices can be broken down into subsets such as corporate machines, remote machines, purchasing department machines, accounting dept. machines, etc.

• Web interface is very clean and has a neat layout.

• The monitoring/metering of software usage was another added bonus

Conclusion

• In trial, it seems that the K1000 system is heavily reliant upon the software package or application having command line deployment capabilities. [This is a concern because we want most deployments to be silent in nature with no user intervention]

• If there was detailed information built-in that explains what an option may or may not do. (Sort of like when hovering over a Microsoft product, it gives details)

• It did not extract any license information from machines but Dell representatives stated that 3rd party tools could be integrated with the K1000 to perform this functionality.

Though you can schedule when you want a patch to be deployed, you cannot inherently make the appliance perform the action immediately as it is contingent upon the client machine checking in. At times, agent provisioning was a pain but this may be primarily due to network security practices taken by Healix. There are also some lingering concerns in reference to the appliance such as using it to remove software from a system, false-positive reporting, and the fact that we had trouble with some of the Healix proprietary software pieces.

Dell Kace Overview

Kace K1000 Management Appliance is a client management tool that can be employed primarily to automate and expedite the process of software updates. It offers numerous other benefits including license management, patch management/distribution, inventory management, remote support and better enforced security.

What department objectives will KACE assist in addressing?

Connect it to the network, give it an IP address and its ready to start managing all the systems on the network
