Issues

I do not have any issues with the morals that are presented, however I do think that Shrek kind of undermines his own moral when he makes fun of Lord Farquaad's stature

Things That Are Punished

In Summary

  • In Beauty and the Beast, Beauty's sister's greed and wickedness is punished when they are turned to statues to witness their sister's happiness
  • In Shrek, Lord Farquaad's narcissism is punished when Fiona chooses Shrek over him.

I did not realize just how similar Beauty and the Beast is to Shrek, as Shrek spoofs multiple fairy tales at once, however it is quite amazing how parallel these two stories are

Prized/Rewarded

  • Inner Beauty
  • Beauty is valued for her loving and kind personality above her greedy sisters
  • Shrek, though ugly on the outside, has a heart of gold and truly cares about Fiona and so, in the end, she picks Shrek over Lord Farquaad.
  • Thinking for yourself
  • Over and over Beauty was told what to do, and instead she thought for herself and made the correct decision, regardless of what she had been told.
  • Shrek "should never had had a chance" with Fiona because that is not how fairy tales work. Instead of conforming to that, he made his own decisions and decided to take his fate into his own hands.
  • True Love conquers all
  • Beauty brings Beast back from his deathbed and turns him into a beautiful prince by admitting that he was her true love and breaking the curse
  • In a similar fashion, true love's first kiss breaks Fiona's curse, and turns her into her true love's form, humorously, an ogre.

Values/Morals

  • It is wrong to judge people on their appearance/ Inner beauty matters more
  • Seen in Shrek as Fiona (and the rest of the world) judges Shrek for his outward appearance.
  • Seen in Beauty and the Beast as Beauty assumes that the Beast wants to eat her judging by his name and appearance
  • No man is an island
  • Seen in Shrek as he changes from keeping everyone out of his swamp to valuing companionship
  • Seen in Beauty and the Beast as once Beast has had a taste of companionship, the thought of losing Beauty makes him attempt to kill himself

The ideals presented in these stories, as seen here, are basically the same in both.
