What is Progeria?
Causes
Progeria, or HGPS, is a rare disease that gives children the appearance of accelerated aging all over the body but especially the face and head.

A mutation causes the body to produce a protein known as progerin. When cells use the protein, they begin to break down quicker. Its not passed down, which makes it very hard to be detected before birth and almost impossible to prevent it.

Sypmtoms
Symptons:
Growth failure
Loss of body fat
Loss of hair
Skin starts to look aged
Stiffness in the joints
Hip dislocation
Generalized atherosclerosis (cardio and heart disease)
Stroke
Many children die of heart disease and only live from age 8 to 21. Average death age is 13.

Inherited
There is no way to know if a child is going to get this disease. They could have children and they would be unaffected, but most don't have kids because they die at such a young age.
Treatment
There is no cure but there is a cancer drug called FTI that may slow the effects. Doctors can also prescribe other drugs to help with the symptoms.

People who get it
There is a 1 out of 4 to 8 million chance to get this disease and every race or nationality has a chance to get it. In the last 15 years, 25 countries have reported cases of Progeria.

Doctors can diagnose Progeria by the distinct characteristics and by a test called the FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization).
