- The proportions of students from each geographic region in the normative sample closely correspond to the proportions shown in the US population (Midwest, South, Northeast, and West.)
- Proportions of Whites, African Americans, Hispanics, Asians and other racial groups were also based on racial proportion of individuals within corresponding groups in the US population
- 7.9% of the fall sample and 7.6% of the spring sample contained students with diagnosed disabilities. (4% learning disability in reading, writing, or mathematics, 1.9% expressive language disorder, and 1% ADD/ADHD)

Alphabet writing fluency (k-2)
- Assesses written expression ability. Given 30 seconds, student is to write all letters of the alphabet.
Sentence composition (1-12)
- Assesses written expression ability. Is made up of two parts, sentence combining and sentence building.
Essay Composition (3-12)
- Assesses written expression ability. Given 10 minutes, student is to write an essay on a single topic. Examiner scores based on word count, theme, and grammar and mechanics.
Spelling
- At an appropriate grade level, student is to spell words correctly.
Reading Comprehension and Fluency

Reading Comprehension (Grade Appropriate)
- Student is given a passage to read and answer questions. Examiner gives a correct score for corresponding responses.
Oral Reading Fluency (Grade Appropriate)
- Student is to read a passage aloud. Examiner records reading time, additions, supplied words, substitutions/ omissions, transpositions, and prosody scale (how the student read)
