Pyramid of Prejudice and racism
The government has used the law to promote community cohesion. Examples of this include:
Race Relations Act
Crime and Disorder Act
Racial Hatred Act
Each group will research ONE of these Acts. Feedback to the class in 15 minutes!
For this lesson, have a go at making four paper people...
Create a timeline of events using key dates and facts. What has changed for women since 1882?
Why do traditional Christians believe this?
This teaching is based on:
•The teachings of St Paul in Timothy about women not being allowed to teach or speak in church.
•The disciples of Jesus being men.
This teaching is based on:
1882
Married Woman's Property Act
•The teachings of Genesis 1 that men and women were created at the same time and equally.
•There is possible evidence that there were women priests in the early church. They must have existed in order to be banned by the Council of Laodicea in the fourth century.
•The teaching of St Paul that in Christ there is neither male nor female.
In the exam, when a Type C question regarding religious attitudes toward equal rights for women; it will always ask you to compare two different points of view therefore instead of four brief explained statements...go for two in-depth statements.
Traditional Protestant
Women should NOT speak in church and must submit to their husbands. It is the role of men to provide for the family and lead the family in religion.
Modern Protestant
Why is community cohesion so important?
Many Protestant Churches now accept that men and women are equal and they have women ministers and priests (eg Church of England, Methodist and Baptist). These churches teach that men and women have equal roles.
Why is the Vicar allowed to be a priest?
2 MARKS
Men must love their wives as themselves, but only men can be Church leaders and teachers.
Men and women should have separate and different roles. It is the role of women to bring up children and run a Christian home.
The government promotes community cohesion by:
- Appointing people from ethnic minorities. An example of this in the government is Baroness Uddin. Does Mr Haseldine have to employ ethnic minorities in school? Why?
- Establishing the Equality and Human Rights Commission. What do they do and why?

Equal Pay Act (2 marks)
Another example of the changing attitudes towards the role of men and women was the introduction of the Equal Pay Act in 1970 which required employers to give women the same pay as men – equal pay for like work regardless
of the employee’s sex.
It was the Labour governments of the 1970s
which was dedicated to the Equal Rights campaign.
Sex Discrimination Act (2 marks)
Then in 1975, the Sex Discrimination Act made it illegal to discriminate in employment on grounds of gender or whether someone is married. These Acts gave women the right to take employers to court if they treated them differently.
The development of the Human Rights declaration of Human Rights and the feminist movement made it very difficult to contradict such changes.
Married Woman's Property Act (2 marks)
The role of women changed significantly with the passing of the Married Woman's Property Act 1882
which allowed married women to keep their property
separate from their husbands.
This gave women economical power and
would lead to further changes in the law.
Electoral Reform Act (2 marks)
This was followed by the Electoral Reform Act which gave equal voting rights to women and allowed women to stand as MPs. This was made possible by other countries such as New Zealand (first country to
offer voting rights to women) and this made it very difficult for the UK to avoid such a change.
Women were now able to influence the decisions of Parliament and again this changed the role of women.
How does the government promote community cohesion. (8 marks)
2 MARKS
Another way in which the government promotes community cohesion by:
Supporting groups, projects and organisations that are working for community cohesion.
An example of one of these groups is...
There are four strategies which the government have put into place to encourage communities to live together in peace. We need to know all four for the exam, which we will write on our paper people!
2 MARKS
One way in which the government promotes community cohesion is by making it:
Part of the national education curriculum in schools either in RE or PSHE. Education and Inspection Act 2006 said all maintained schools need to promote community cohesion, and Ofsted must report on this.
*Why is RE in schools so important that it is made compulsory?*
In Genesis 1: 27-28 we find “And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth...” So originally male and female worked together in harmony with God.
The Catholic Church teaches that men and women should have equal roles in life and society. Women have the same rights as men in the Church and are able to study and teach in theological colleges.
Catholic Church teaches that only men can be priests. It teaches that this does not affect the equal status of men and women. It is because of the special function of the priest representing Jesus at the Mass.
Why?
This teaching is based on:
• The teachings of Genesis 1 that men and women were created at the same time and equally.
• The teaching of the Catholic Catechism that men and women are equal, but only men can be priests.
• The fact that all of the apostles were men and priests and bishops are successors of the apostles.
• The fact that Jesus was a man and the priest represents Jesus at the Mass.
- As we know it today the UK has been as a multi-ethnic society since WW2.
- The UK government recruited workers from the Commonwealth such as India, Pakistan, Africa, Bangladesh, West Africa and the Caribbean to lessen labour shortage.
- These countries had supported Britain during the war.
RACE RELATIONS ACT - 1976
- Discriminate against anyone because of their race, colour, nationality, or ethnic background in terms of housing, training, jobs, education or the provision of services.
- Use threatening or abusive language that could stir up racial hatred.
- Publish anything that could cause racial hatred.

- Multi Faith Society – Many different religions living ‘together’ in one society.
- Many societies used to be mono – faith (one religion), mainly became this in the 20th Century.
- Although some consider that Britain was mono-faith up until the 16th Century - Protestant, Catholics and Jews.
- This lead to laws allowing religious freedom.

Task
For this lesson, I want you to start by making a chatterbox!
This is a picture of Muslims at the Hajj pilgrimage.
What clues can you get from this photo about Muslim
attitudes towards racial harmony?
(jot down some ideas on the post it note)
‘People descended from Adam, and Adam was made out of dust. There is no superiority for an Arab over an non-Arab, neither for a white man over a black man...’
Allah does not look upon your outward
appearance, he looks upon your hearts and
deeds'
"O humanity, I am the messenger of to you all!" (Surah 7)
"all people
are as equal
as the teeth
of a comb."
What does the Qur'an and Muhammad say about equality between people?
Another way that Muslims show racial harmony, is through the five pillars. Discuss each pillar and write down how each shows equality.
A society that is both religiously pluralist and had religious freedom can create issues for religions:
- Conversion - Some religions (Christianity and Islam) believe all should convert to their one faith. Can lead to conflict on opinion - WHY?
- Children – Multi-faith society needs children to learn about all religions, and have choice of religious freedom - WHY?
- Mixed Marriage – Young people of different religions are going to meet to want to marry each other - WHY?
Exam Question
TEAM A - Explain why the United Kingdom is often refereed to as a multi-faith society?
TEAM B – Explain why mixed faith marriages may cause issues in a multi-faith society?
Time for a treasure hunt!
- Increases tolerance and understanding, learn about other faiths.

What have we learnt?
Task

Each pair will receive instructions for a treasure hunt. Each of the 'treasures' are outside of the school. The first pair back wins a prize!
Church Teaching
What have the Christian churches actually said about racism and working together?
Work on the clues I provide for you, and find each of the statements - each one will tell you another reason why Christians must respect ALL races.
2. St Paul's Teaching
Jesus' teaching
St Paul teaches racial harmony through the New Testament.
In the Galatians, St Paul taught that everyone is equal in Christ, and so there can be no divisions of race amongst Christians.
He also said that God created all nations from one man, therefore everyone is equal.
2. Just as Jesus treated a Samaritan woman as his equal (John), he also healed a Roman centurion’s servant (Luke 7) and had a black African helping him to carry his cross.
Christians believe that people should follow the examples of Jesus, promoting racial harmony.
Every pair MUST be back in 20 minutes, irregardless of whether you have found each clue or not.
What have we learnt today?
GOOD LUCK!
