Family structure of the 1990s

The evolution of American family systems

Family structure of the 2000s

As the divorce rate climbed and climbed through the 2000s it was common for a divorced parent to remarry, in fact about 75% of divorcees remarry. This caused for many children to be raised by two families sometimes with two married families, sometimes with two unmarried, and with around 1300 step families forming each day its not uncommon for either to happen.

By Andrew Thomas Logterman The XIV

During the 1990s it was common for an unmarried woman to have a child, something that would cause the child to be put up for adoption 50 years prior. The 90s changed up the ways that familys can live. White families sometiems lived with extended family, as shown in the popular show, "Full House", and with a higher divorce rate than ever single parent families were more prominent than ever before.

Family structure of the 2010s

African American family structure of the 2000s

Starting in the 1970s, the percentage of families living with both parents has been decreasing up until the 2010s, in 2000 it was 69%, in 2012 it was 64%, but now it is 65%, hopefully signifying a increase in two parent households. In the 2010s, families have been more different then ever, with more homosexual families and single parent families, and an especially large growth in the number of children raised solely by their grandparents(7%) than ever before. Meaning we can't rely on the old family structures of the past, but instead have to adapt to the ways of the new.

The Structure of homosexual families during the 2010s

With the new law passed by the supreme court legalizing gay marriage, homosexual marriage is more prevalent than ever before. Although some people do not agree with homosexuals raising children, it is now legal for them to also adopt children. This has led to an increase in homosexuality families as they are no longer afraid to show their sexuality.

With the inauguration of the first black president, the 2000s were an important time in African American history. There was an increase of black children who lived in poverty, (38%) and the most poverty from families are single women households with children, of which 48% are impoverished. This huge percentage of people who live in poverty leads to a large number of black families who live in the ghettos of large cities. Poverty like this also increases children's chances of getting into crime or joining a gang at an older age.

Single Parent Family structure of the 1970s

Family structure of the 1980s

As it was very common for african American families to be single parent households, most of them lived in poverty in urban areas such as Chicago and New York City. If a child was raised without a father the mother would live in a house full of her extended family, who would help care for the children and work to get food on the table. The percentage of children with two-parent households dropped from 2/3 in 1960s to 1/3 in the 1990s. This led to more poverty among African American households and an increase of families who lived in the ghettos.

As the structure of two-parent households stayed basically the same throughout the 1970s, there was an increasing rate of divorce present, this led to more single parent households. Single parents made on average $30,000 per year, while a two parent household made around $75,000 on average. This made life harder for the family and usually the children would have to take on household responsibility while mom or dad was at work. Having a single mother or father hurts the children of the family as well, as they are more likely to commit crime or suicide, and also have an increased chance of divorce when they are older.

As the children from the baby boom grew up they dissipated the norm of the "Nuclear Family." That was so oftenly shown by shows like "Leave it to Beaver" and "Family Ties." During this decade it was not uncommon to have a single parent household, or sometimes even a three parent household.

Family structure of a homosexual family in the 1980s

pepe

As the decades went on the rate of homosexual marriages increased. Although there was a ban on homosexual marraige many had a unofficial marriage and still lived together. The homosexual family structure was not much different from that of any other family. Very rare was it that one parent stayed home while the other worked. Homosexual couples most of the time could not adopt children because it was against state laws.

1950's

Family Structure in the 1960s

As technology became more advanced women had to do less work at home, with the introduction of the washing machine and dishwasher. This caused many women to go to work everyday. This family structure where both parents worked led to a higher cost of living as well as a improved living style and an increase in the middle class.

Mother stayed at home and did the housework and cleaned, which was much more difficult without the household tech we have today like the washing machine or dishwasher. Many children over the age of 14 worked factory jobs to earn some extra money for the family. Father worked as well and made all of the family's income.
