History of the CPC

The Communist Party of Canada was illegally founded in 1921, in a barn outside of Guelph, Ontario. Through the 94 years that the CPC has been around, it has never formed the government or opposition, and has only had one candidate elected in 1945. However, the one candidate that did get elected was elected under the Labor-Progressive Party, because the CPC got banned from running in 1941.

In 1991 the Soviet Union collapsed, so the CPC decided to become more socialist-democratic, in order to keep the small amount of support they had.

The CPC's logo is a gear and pinion, accompanied by ears of wheat. These symbolize the unity of workers and farmers.

The Communist Party of Canada

A brief history:

Communism is a type of government founded by Karl Marx and Fredrick Engles in the second half of the 19th century. In 1848, Marx and Engles published the communist manifesto.

Communism is a political theory derived from Marx advocating class war, and leading to a society in which property is publicly owned, and each person works and is paid according to their abilities. Communism sits on the far left of the political spectrum.

Some Pros/Cons of Communism

Pros:

1. Everyone receives health care

2. Rate of unemployment will decrease

3. Education is easily accessible

Cons

1. Businesses are limited to what they earn

2. Poverty is prevalent, and there is no personal freedoms.

Communists are extremely opposed to capitalism. In a capitalist society, businesses are privately owned, and the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. Capitalist societies have a huge middle class, a slightly smaller lower class, and a very small upper class. In a communist society, the goal is a classless society, where essentially everyone is part of the middle class, also known as the working class.

Generally in a communist society, there is very rigid control over peoples' freedoms however, with the Communist Party of Canada this is less of the case. The party sees itself as more socialist than totalitarian, and in their elections campaign, they promise to continue to make every vote count, and have an elected government. They also promise to protect freedom of speech, and to end government spying.

Some examples of places that have totalitarian communist governments are:

North Korea (communist movement in Korea)

China (Communist party of China)

Columbia (Columbia communist party)

What Exactly is Communism?

Miguel Figueroa was born in Montreal on July 29th, 1952. He became a member of the Communist party in 1977, and became the leader in 1992. In 2003, Figueroa had a huge victory when he won the court case Figueroa vs. the Attorney General of Canada. Figueroa took the Attorney General to court to challenge the Canadian Elections Act, as he found many aspects to be undemocratic. He won, and the courts declared some parts of the act to be unconstitutional. This win was very important for the CPC, because it got rid of the minimum 50 candidates to register as a political party requirement of the act. Thus, by removing this clause, the CPC could now run in future elections.

Key Criticisms

Discussion!

The CPC gets zero media attention, as they have absolutely no hope of forming government, or the opposition—ever. So, we came up with some of our own key criticisms.

vs.

1. By leaving NATO and NORAD, we leave the ourselves nearly defenseless, and give other countries the ability to assume that we maybe planning an attack against them. However, by leaving these alliances, we can get back to Canadian basics—peace keeping, because we will have no obligations to fight. What do you think is more important: protection, or peace keeping?

1. The CPC has huge plans, that will shake up our day to lives a lot. Their plans also include spending a lot of money, without a lot coming back in. We can assume that the rich will start paying a lot more, and the poor a lot less, but money is still an issue. We think that the CPC over steps their bounds quite a bit in their election platform, with regards to what they will spend.

2. In the CPC's plans to leave NAFTA and all other free trade agreements, they put Canada's import export income at nearly zero. Trading within a country has proven difficult, especially making money off of internal trades. Although free trade agreements fuel capitalism, leaving free trade agreements would kill our economy. If the CPC wanted an economically stable Canada, they would not leave the free trade agreements.
