The Gulf War sparked the broadcasting company CNN (Cable News Network) because it was the only corporation that was getting live footage in Iraq. It boosted their standings to the top and millions of Americans and Canadians watched in action combat for the first time on television.

Introduction:

-Iraq had new chemical and biological weapons (i.e poison gas)

- From August 2nd 1990 until February 28th 1991.

-Iraq was in a large debt

-The Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein, decided to take over Kuwait and take their oil

-Everyone knew that Saddam had to be stopped so The Gulf War, otherwise known as Operation Desert Storm, had begun.

Canada and The Gulf War 1991

Overview:

-If Iraq controlled Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Saddam would control about half of the world's oil.

- UN told Iraq to retreat before January 15th or else the coalition would attack.

-They did not listen so the day after, allied troops began the attack

-The Iraqi men started blowing up oil fields all over Kuwait and caused great destruction

Canada's Involvement

-Canadian military lead Operation FRICTION

-3 ships were sent (2 destroyers and 1 supply ship)

-They protected the gulf and made sure no Iraqi supply ships came in

-CF-18 Hornets were also launched to help defend
