Gordon Parks

Early 1940s & 1950s, 1960s-1990s

Most of Gordon Parks' photos from the 1940s and 1950s dealt with the FSA and civil rights. Many of the images depict public racism and the segregation of African-Americans. His photos exposed the difficult truth of how black people were being treated.

Humans of New York

2010-Now

These photographs focus on the diversity of people who live in New York City. The collection is quite random, but it has a theme of creativity. The modern aspect involves higher quality photos. The photographer captures scenes of people's every day lives and inserts their quotes to tell a story.

Differences of the

Collections

These photos are a few of the many racial segregation images that Parks captured. The photo to the far left and middle dealt with how African-Americans had designated areas to go to while out in public. His use of color in the photos adds more of an impact due to the content. He was able to capture real life situations. The photo on the far right dealt with the FSA in 1942. The focus was on the woman, but the background helps tell a story. His style of photography tends to be distance shots.

All three collections have several differences. The FSA collection deals mainly with the struggles of rural farmers. The photos showed the levels of poverty throughout America. All of the images in the FSA collection were black and white, while many of the images in the other two collections were color. Several of Gordon Parks' photos dealt with segregation. Humans of New York images don't really deal with a lot of struggles but rather the uniqueness of people. Most of the photos in the HONY collection have on one or two people in it. A lot of the images in the other two collections are large group photos. HONY images are higher quality due to better technology. He was able to use blur and focus features.

  • The photographer focused on the woman's earring in the photo on the left. He blurred the background to have her head as the focus. The image on the right was taken after the woman was evicted from her home. He was able to capture her emotion.

Reasoning for the Collections

The purpose of the collections was to show every day experiences of people's lives. The photographers had the intention of spreading a powerful message by showing the struggles of many Americans. The collections have differences and similarities.

Similarities of the Collections

Farm Security Administration

1935-1944

This vast collection is a record of the struggles of rural farmers in America during the Great Depression. The images that a group of hired photographers captured were meant to press information to the public about how tough life truly was for the farmers and migrant workers.

The collections have some similarities. They all tell a story of American lives. The FSA collection and Gordon Parks' collection contain photos that depicted struggles of Americans. All of the collections have many portraits of people in them. The photographers were able to capture the things people did on a daily basis. Humans of New York and Gordon Parks' collections have artistic aspects such as fashion. The style of photography stay somewhat the same in the collections.

  • This photo taken by Dorothea Lange shows how some families had to live in tents. The image as a whole gives a feeling of sadness.
  • This photo by Dorothea Lange represents the feeling of despair that families endured during this time period. The mother does not smile, and the children cower behind her shoulder. This image was one of the most remembered in the collection.
