Bohr's Model : the Hydrogen Atom

Lorenzo Alvarado

Pre- AP Chemistry, Period 2

The Origin

1) Electrons in atoms orbit the nucleus.

2) The electrons orbit stably in certain orbits without radiating.

3) Electrons can only gain/lose energy by jumping from one allowed orbit to another orbit.

4) The energy of the orbit is related to the size. Lowest energy = smallest and so on.

Ernest Rutherford established that atoms consisted of a diffused cloud of negatively charged electrons that surrounded a small positively charged nucleus.

Niels Bohr suggested that electrons could have certain classical motions but can jump from one energy to another. He stated it in these points...

Positive Effects :

Bohr's theory of quantum was correct

It gave a look into the true quantized behavior of an atom

It gives a lead to students who a being introduced into quantum mechanics.

Widely used by universities and such.

Random Facts

Problems with it..

Neils Bohr won the Noble Prize in Physics in 1922. He was 28.

There is an institute named the Neils Bohr Institute. Bohr was the director when it opened in March 3, 1921

Bohrs was a physicist and philosopher.

He was Danish and bron on October 7, 1885

Bohr's model violates the Heisenbrg Uncertainty Principle because it considers electrons to have a known radius/orbit.

Provides an incorrect value for the ground state orbital angular momentum

Does not explain the Zeeman Effect and fine structure/ hyperfine structure in spectral lines.

Does not predict the relative inensities of spectral lines.
