Second, alter your reactions to the misbehavior. Once the goal of misbehavior had been identified, control your immediate reaction to misbehavior so that your response does not reinforce the misbehavior. Then, have a discussion with the student to identify a number of alternatives for changing the behavior.

Methods to deal with Mistaken Goals

First, identify the goal of the misbehavior. The student may be trying to gain attention for all the wrong reasons. Then try to disclose the student' s goal, which could be seeking revenge, power or display of inadquacy. This is a positive way of confronting the misbehaving student.

Dreikurs beilieved that discipline is not puinshment. It is only teaching students to impose limits on themselves. With this approach, students are responsible for their own actions, have respect for themselves and others, have responsibilty to influnce others to behave appropriately, and are responsible for knowing the classroom rules and consequences.

Mistaken Goal and

Associated Misbehaviors

  • Attention: Attention-seeking towards teachers or peers.

  • Power: Students engages in teacher vs. student power struggle. Student does not want to follow given instructions and requests.

  • Revenge: Focus on issues of fairness and the students attempts to exact revenge. (examples include cheating, stealing, or disruction of property.)

  • Inadequacy: Simply ives up disengages completely. Student withdraws for class partipaction and activites.

But in some cases students are not able to gain thie geniune goal of belonging and understanding, so they turn to a series of mistaken goals.

Dreikur's Theory

Strategies

  • Rudolf Dreikurs based his strategies on the belief that students are motivated to get recognition and to belong with others.

  • Students seek social acceptance from conforming to the group and making useful contributions to it.

  • Dreikur's views his approaches as demorcratic in that teachers and students decide on rules and consequences, and they have joint responsability for maintaining a positive classroom climate.

Logical Consequence

Logical Consequnce: An event that is arranged by the teacher that is directly and logically related to the misbehavior.

Instead of using punishment, Derikurs perfered to let students experience the consequnces that flow from misbehavior.

Third, provide encouraging statements to the students. Encouragement consists of words or actions that acknowledge the students work and express confidence in them. Encouraging statements help students see what they did to lead to a positive result and also help students feel confident about their abilities.
