Canton Opera
- This opera took place around 17th century
- Some of their melodies came from Cantonese folk music
- It continued to modernize started using other musical styles
- It also started changing their costumes to keep up with the new fashion styles
- With time they added different instruments, to stay modern
- It was greatly moved to all over the world because there were so many immigrants coming in and out of China
- There were over 1000 more operas made in the 20th century
Bangzi Opera (Clapper Opera)
- It was founded in central China
- It spread through out Northern and Southern China
- Clapper operas dominant instrument is called the Bangzi
- The Bangzi is a rectangular plate made up of date palm and gets beaten with a stick
- In this type of opera the lyrics are always made first then they make the music
- The most important instrument is the banhu (violin)
- Costumes are based on the Ming period clothing
- There are many different types of this operah in Northern China

- Wei Changshen was a impersonator of female roles and a very talented acrobat
- Wang Jinshni was a well known actor
- Zhang Wu made a guild for actors in and near Canton
- This theater is a all female opera
- It could also be called the Shoaxing opera
- It is the most recent type of theater made in China
- The acts usually are love stories
- Some of the most well know acts are with Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingitia they are also known as butterfly lovers ( this is kind of like Romeo and Juliet)
- This opera was formed because it had a total different musical style then all of the other operas
- It began during the Ming period (1368-1644)
- The singing sounds more natural
- There are very few if any fighting scenes in this opera
- Some of the actors may have worn thin silk masks
- The masks were used to show different facial expresions
- This operah is played in small villages and is a combination of a play, a dance, singing, and others like this
