Leading Cause of Preventable Death

Obesity causes detrimental conditions:

i.e. heart disease, stroke, and type II diabetes

~200,000 deaths per year

Obesity & Poverty

Link Between Obesity & Poverty

  • Correlation between low socioeconomic status and higher rates of obesity (CDC, 2013).
  • Factors related to the high rates of obesity, include:
  • over-nutrition
  • low levels of activity
  • sleep deprivation
  • age
  • genetic history
  • previous health conditions or medications
  • mental health
  • environment (NIH, 2012)

  • USA Rate: 35% - continuously increases each year
  • Children: 17% [aka over 12 million kids]
  • Pennsylvania Rate: 30%
  • Meadville: ~5000 adults are considered obese in the city alone (CDC, 2013)

  • Crawford County consists of almost 17% of the population living below the poverty line (Census Bureau, 2012)
