Summary

Winston goes to work one morning and notices that the dark haired girl is wearing a sling, she falls.

Winston helps her up, and she passes him a note; the note reads “ I love you”.

Winston who initially suspected the dark haired girl to be a spy, is puzzled as she now claims to be in love with him.

The note has a sudden change on the way Winston perceives life.

A few days pass, and Winston builds the courage to sit with her during the lunch break, however he cannot converse as the feeling of being watched is still just as strong as before; they make plans to meet at Victory square.

They meet at the square where they witness the torment of Eurasian prisoners, and they proceed to take a train to the Country Side.

1984 Book 2: Chapter 1 &2

QUESTION:

The two agree to meet at Victory square as it is always busy and away from any telescreens. Do you think this is a viable place to meet without being caught/questioned?

Winston and the dark-haired girl execute their plan and meet in the Country away from the telescreens.

The dark haired girl kisses Winston

and reveal her name to be Julia.

Winston feels at ease as he feels

that she is experienced.

Julia tears off her Junior Anti-Sex sash and shares a piece of chocolate she got from the black market with Winston. He notices that her eyes are brown.

As they walk through the woods, Winston and Julia made love ( The feeling is identical to Winston's dream)

Winston asks her how many people she has been with and Julia responds "hundreds of times" but only with Outer Party members.

This thrills Winston as it means more people means that there are more party members committing crimes. He feels with this act, they strike a blow back at the Party.

"Actually I am that sort of girl, to look at. I’m good at games. I was a troop-leader in the Spies. I do voluntary work three evenings a week for the Junior Anti-Sex League. Hours and hours I’ve spent pasting their bloody rot all over London. I always carry one end of a banner in the processions. I always Iook cheerful and I never shirk anything. Always yell with the crowd, that’s what I say. It’s the only way to be safe.’" (121-122)

“I hate purity, I hate goodness! I don't want virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones.” (125)

"That was above all what he wanted to hear. Not merely the love of one person but the animal instinct, the simple undifferentiated desire: that was the force that would tear the Party to pieces." (126)

Focus Passages

Shabby- In poor condition

Folly- a lack of good/common sense

Gravitate- to move towards or being attracted to place

Shirk- avoiding or neglecting a responsibility

Vocabulary

Extricate- freeing something from a difficulty or limitation

Pediment - the triangular upper portion of a building/apartment

“Only five nights ago he had contemplated smashing her skull in with a cobblestone; but that was of no importance (p.109).”

This quote supports the idea that Winston is blinded by lust. Prior to receiving the love note, Winston had nothing but hatred for the dark haired girl, and it can be seen here. He found her to be a nuisance, and something that wasn’t very important to him, so he imagined disposing of this nuisance, or even killing her.

Quotes

“For the rest of the morning it was very difficult to work... He felt as though a fire were burning in his belly” (P.108)

This quote shows how vulnerable to this idea of “love” Winston really is. After receiving the note, his minds been acting very peculiar, as the curiosity is leading him into believing that he actually loves this woman. He now has this desire to found out why this women who he always assumed to be a spy, suddenly has new emotion towards him.

Topics: Reality, realism

“Then for three dreadful days she did not appear at all. His whole mind and body seemed to be afflicted with an unbearable sensitivity, a sort of transparency (P.111).

The dark hair girl had just confessed her love, and left Winston in a very curious state. However, Winston is now feeling lost and very empty without the presence, which bears the question, is Winston falling in love?

Ends: "...they stared steadily in front of them, and instead of the eyes of the girl, the eyes of the aged prisoner gazed mournfully at Winston"
