What methods were used to determine if someone were in fact a witch?

  • Powers(diseases, stillborn, milk, forms, suckle spirits)
  • Only women, children, and the insane were accused
  • Some used it as a religion
  • First women were Tituba Sarah Good & Sarah Osborne (seen as different and as social outcasts)

Social Factors:

-People believed it was hereditary

-Anytime something was wrong they blamed it on witchcraft & someone being a witch

Accused because of..

  • cats
  • body imperfections(moles,birthmarks,tags,etc)
  • Lords prayer
  • attribute misfortune to sorcery

Religious Factors:

-Those who practiced witchcraft worshipped the Devil

-Ongoing disagreement between different religions

-The rise of Christianity

  • If a person was different in anyway, they were suspected to be a witch
  • Some women were burned at the stake because bad things happened to be around them

Modern Witchcraft

Witchcraft is a pagan religion. Pagan religions worship multiple deities rather than a single god.
