- Rome was a republic
- Conquered territories overseas - Iberian and Balkan peninsulas
- The republic ended due to internal conflicts --> Ruled by an emperor
- Rome conquered Palestine.
- Christianity became Rome's official religion
- Spain and Portugal established colonies in the Americas
- Their empires spread Catholicism and the Spanish and Portuguese languages.
