Question #2

Key Words and Phrases

Literary Devices

Key words and phrases help us understand the story better by allowing us to connect it to themes and allow us to learn from the characters experiences and find morals to tech us right from wrong.

Question #1

How do you think the parents would have reacted to the death of Doodle? Would the parents react more to the narrators death more tan Doodles? Why?

Literary devices are used to illustrate the story and give meaning and detail to what is going on.

Key words and Phrases #2

Quote: "To discourage his coming with me..."

Quote: "Once I had succeed in teaching Doodle to walk, i began to believe in my own infallibility..."

Quote: "Finally one day, after many weeks of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds."

Would the story have been the same if the scarlet ibis never came? Would they have still gone out, would Doodle still die? Give your own opinion.

Flashback

Question #3

This quote connects to the theme of embarrassment. This is because it shows that Doodles brother is developing a sort of embarrassment towards his brother based on the words used and the actions leading up to cretin events

This quote demonstrates the theme of pride. In the story the narrator prides him self so much that he ends up letting his pride go to far and letting it get the best of him.

This quote shows the theme of perseverance this is because in the story we see that Doodle is overcoming the obstacle of his health conditions and is accomplishing goals like walking.

A flashback is when an author writes about an event that happened in the past.

Quote: "Keeping a nice secret is hard to do, like holding your breath."

Why is it that the crazy person (Aunt Nicey) in the family the only one that thinks Doodle will live? Why is it that his only parents don't believe in Doodles well being?

Quote: " Its strange that all this is still clear to me, now that summer has long since fled and time has had its way."

This whole story is an example of a flashback, the narrator is remembering the strong memories that he had with his brother. In the beginning the narrator is describing how he cant believe that he still remembers everything as stated in the quote.

We know that this is a simile because it is comparing to things that are different and is used to express emphasis. This allows us to depict how hard it was for them to hold their secret from their parents.

Foreshadowing

One example of foreshadowing that was used is when Aunt Nicey, one of the characters, says....

-"Dead bird id bad luck ,said Aunt Nicey, poking her head from the kitchen door. "Specially red dead bird."

This is an example of foreshadowing because at the end of the story Doodle dies and is refered to the fallen scarlet ibis. This is telling us that something bad was going to happen in the story. Also the author didn't flat out say that Doodle was going to die. He used the voice of one of the characters to imply what was going to happen.

-Foreshadowing is when the author uses sentences, character actions, character emotions, and any events, to describe what will happen next without actually telling you.

Another example of Foreshadowing

Foreshadowing was used at the beginning of the story too. It is used in the beginning when Doodle was first born. The narrator said "...he looked at me and grinned."

This is an example of foreshadowing because from this quote we are able to infer what will happen next. Because Doodle was "invalid" he is now showing room of improvement and w know that he will be able to do more things in the story which is actually true.;

This is seen as an example of foreshadowing because in the video Bella (the female character dressed in blue) reads a story about a girl falling in love with a prince. In the end of the movie that happens to her she ends up falling in love with a beast and later finds out this beast is actually a prince.

Inter textual Connections

THE END!!!

Inter textual connection #2

I related this picture to the Scarlet Ibis to the beginning of the story. The narrator in the beginning is reflecting on the bleeding tree and how it reminded him of the fallen scarlet ibis and Doodle and in this picture a man is walking a way from a grave of what appears to be like a kids grave. Therefore as a symbol of remembrance to the man; the grave - the bleeding tree.

Inter Textual Connections #1

Synthesis

Quote: "It was in the clove of seasons , summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit the bleeding tree.

I connected this video to the scarlet ibis because in the begging of this video Greg's big brother makes it look like he pooped his pants and is being mean to him. In the story of The Scarlet Ibis the narrator was mean to Doodle by making Doodle touch his coffin.

Inter Textual Connections #3

I found that this song went well at the end of the story. I thought that it pulled all of the elements of reading and the morals the James Hurts used. In the back of my mind when i was reading this story all i could think of was this song and how much this story reminded me of it.

Contextual Information

When reading the Scarlet ibis i realized that there are multiple themes to this story but one that stood out to me the most was that you never know how much you love something until its taken from you. The author used a great variety of literary devices that allowed me to better understand and get more meaning out of the story.

I was able to connect to the story with me being that I am the oldest out of my brothers and I was able to realize that maybe I may be a little to harsh with them. This story was a great eye opener and had a strong moral at the end.

I connected this to The Scarlet Ibis because in this story at the end Doodle dies and the narrator cries and regrets what happened and in this music video the two people get in a fight and the girl runs off and gets into a car accident and dies, similar to Doodle and the narrator.

At the beginning

I was astonished I couldn't believe that his brother was treating him that way when he knew he was disabled and special. Although after a while i realized that kids don't really understand illness so i then felt sorry for both of the boys because their parents didn't really tell them or inform them of doodles disses.

I felt this way because I couldn't believe that his parents didn't really care enough about him because they made a coffin for him.

At the End

James Hurst

Story back ground

At the end I couldn't believe what I read, DOODLE IS DEAD!!

He grew up on a farm by the sea and attended North Carolina state college which explains the setting of the story. Also he says that there are three characters; the narrator, Doodle, and the setting.

Understand what a Scarlet ibis was helped me better understand why the scarlet ibis died, it died due to the storm pulling it up ward and it over working his body.

What is a Scarlet Ibis?

A Scarlet ibis is a bird in the bird family of ibis. It inhabits South America and the islands of the Caribbean.
