BACKGROUND & HISTORY
The typeface was inspired by 1930s American Sans-Serifs and New York City’s vernacular lettering
Gotham’s influence was signage, letterings thrown together by engineers and draftsmen outside the realm of typography
Hoefler & Frere-Jones were commissioned to design a signature sans serif for GQ in 2000
This gave them the chance to study and explore the style of building lettering in New York
They began with the sign for the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Gotham was designed to exhibit the "mathematical reasoning of a draftsman," while also flowing outside the grid when reasonable
it has a straightforward personality
